COURAGE BEER

Post by chargermac »

Anyone come across COURAGE Beer before :?:
found some beer coasters in the shed the other day.
1 - Country Bitter.... Brewed for this thirsty country.
2 - 1770 Colonial Ale....Authentic flavour of early Australian Ale.
3 - Crest Lager....Brewed for you,because it's brewed for men.
4 - Courage Draught....Enjoy it across the bar and in bottles and cans.

Anyone know the year these beers would have been made?
Would anyone have recipes that represent any of these?

Also on the back of each coaster is one of 2 poems.

1/ The Perfect Barmaid.
Like a rolling stone that gathers no moss,
a rushing barmaid pleases the boss.
Unmoved by noise,smoke or heat,
she dauntlessly stands on sure footed feet.
She's shaped like Venus and as soft as a doe,
but she's firm as the law when she has to say "no".
The perfect barmaid pulls a great beer
and when it's her choice the answer's clear.
She takes Courage.

2/ The Perfect Publican.
A publican must be a democrat, an autocrat,
an acrobat and a door mat.
He must be able to entertain prime ministers,
pickpockets, philanthropists and police.
To be successful he must keep the bars full,
the house full, the tanks full
and not get full himself.
He must have barmen who are honest, quick
workers and thinkers, non drinkers,
mathematicians, technicians and at all times
on the boss's side, the customers' side
and stay on the inside of the bar.
Like all of us the publican needs... courage.
Take Courage Draught.

Having worked behind a bar myself I think both of these can be considered to be ageless statements of the trade.

PS before I get hammered, No i am not shaped like Venus and definately not doe like.

Stu :D
BEER! Much more than just a four letter word.

Courage I think would have disappeared from the market in the mid seventies. I don't think it was very good beer.

Somewhere I have a brass pressed metal wall hanging in the shape of a plate. It has a rooster on it from memory, and the catch phrase 'take courage'

I also have one full bottle of Courage draught, but I don't think it would be drinkable - it would certainly take a lot of courage. Also two full bottles of the 1770 ale. I wonder if they are worth any money to a collector? Think I have a full bottle of West End draught too.

Yeh mobydick, think they started up late 60's and disappeared mid 70's. UK Courage tried to take on CUB on their own dunghill. Not a smart move!

From memory, beer was half decent, but not as appealing to local tastebuds as Carton Draught, which I recall was the dominant tap beer in country Victoria at the time. Biggest problem was lack of market penetration - only available at independent pubs, which were subjected to commercial pressures that would, perhaps, be considered illegal today.
Cheers,

I think the bottles I have are 26oz.

As I recall back in the early seventies, when you went into a pub, you had two choices in beer. 1. a pot 2. a glass

Then someone invented light beer.

Yep I have had Courage Draught in the 70s underage of course

Courage was extensivly marketed

The North Melbourne Football Club was sponsered by Courage Breweries
from 75 to 77

The Motto on the Arden street grandstands and players dressing gowns at quarter times was

"North have Courage"

Also there was some cross promotion in Crawford Television Productions

If you are famialiar with the Bluey police detective series starring Lucky Grills

After every case Bluey solved he sat back in his office and had a sixpack of Crest Lager. At least this was a realistic police series lol

also cars in the series were supplied by Chrysler, you see Bluey (or possibly a stuntman) doing a hanbrakey in his Valiant at the start of the show.

as a matter of fact I have a bbq apron at home advertidsing Corage Bitter 26 and two thirds fluid ounces.

"Theres beers, not bad beers, good beers, great beers and sadly a minorty of $#!! beers". I aim to try them all
