Coopers Pale Ale kit

Ugh! I'm finishing off the last of my bottled stockpile and came across this bloody awful beer. It was a Coopers pale with 1kg malt and no hops. That is wrong. It tastes like Southwark! And I'm not exaggerating.

I know that this is a popular kit, but is that with or without extra hops?

Wish you had'nt of told me this. I have one of the exact same thing to throw down. Got the tins of pal ale and malt sitting in the garage waiting to do, only thing was I was going to add some hops to it. Got a tea bag of hallerteu sitting there, so might chuck that in, though I am keen to try out amarillo, as it seems a pretty popular hop on this forum!

PoR came through very strongly in mine, and it was a dirty PoR flavour too.

:D :D :D

Well that happens now anyway. I find the kits are just not hoppy enough for me ever. I usually to a tea bag in them for simplicity.
JUst come back form dropping my daughter off to pre school and did a recon of Camden, as a new brew shop has opened up there. Might pop over there when I find the correct address and grab some amarillo.

I have a really nice recipe for the Pale Ale can, even my GF loves it.

Coopers Pale Ale
1kg LDME
150g Medium Crystal
100g Carapils
12g Goldings @15

It's a good can, just might be a little sweet with the LDME but no hops. If you don't want to add hops, I'd recommend using a BE2 instead of the LDME.

I tend to do this for the PA kit..

PA Kit
1.5Kg Light Malt
200g Crystal Malt
30g Cascade (split into 20 for 30, 10 for 10 and perhaps some to dry hop too)

I know poeple have put somewhere here how to use it to get an actualy Pale Ale taste/look/feel to it here too...

....did you use the kit yeast or something else?

Kit yeast. Otherwise you could sub for a Coopers yeast recultured from the bottle for a slightly cleaner taste. Actually I used light JW crystal in my original recipe, but will use medium in my next attempt.

The Goldings is nice and subtle, and fits in oh so well with malty-sweet edge of this pale.

No probs....I've been mashing like mad over the last few weeks and this weekend I need to put together a pale ale, but couldn't be bothered with a full mash...I'll chuck it together and see how it goes!

Cheers,
TL

Did a mini mash with a Pale Ale tin and it came out a beauty, so much I plan on doing a repeat, but perhaps replacing the 1.5kg LLME with 2kg of base malt:

1.7kg Coopers Pale Ale
1.5kg Cooopers Light LME
250g JW Vienna
250g JW Light Munich
200g JW Light Crystal
15g Amarillo @ 15min
15g Amarillo dry hopped
Wyeast 1056 American Ale Yeast.

Cheers

Cracked another longie last night and yep, it's still yummo. As it happens, to date, it's my most popular HB as far as my beer drinking mates (ie. critics) are concerned.

Mate recomended doing this one. whada yo reckon?

1 can coopers pale
500g light dry or liquid malt
300g Dextrose
200g maltodextrine (corn syrup)
250g crystal grain
10g POR 45 min boil
5g POR 15 min boil
a good pommie ale yeast

Why use a good pommie ale yeast with something that will be poisoned by PoR to that degree? I recon the unmodified kit tastes awful because of the PoR flavour. Adding more PoR (especially as a flavour hop), *shudder*

That being said, that is basically an 'Aussie' PA. Better off using a recultured CPA yeast. Use the Brit yeast for the same recipe, except maybe use fuggles, willamette or goldings.

I agree with the english ale yeast. I use it in most of my beers. Im not a fan of the coopers yeast as all beer made with it taste the same.

Try make this can with a few different ale yeasts and see what you like.

My standard CPA is

Can
BE2
300g LME
200g Dried wheat malt
200g light crystal steeped for 30 mins
20g Sazz/ Hallertau/ Cascade/ Amarillo

Tastes great and holds a smooth head.
