Kev, a question for you or KEG- if I download something from youtube and transfer it to My Favourites, when I play that from My Favourites am I using the same amount of bandwidth as I used to get it from youtube originally?
Do you see what I mean?
Ta.

Yes it will most likely redownload that video several times, though it may keep it cached for a while every time you view it.
The best way to go about it is to download the program vdownloader:

It is very easy to use, but if you get stuck just ask

If you're a Firefox user, there is a plugin called 'Unplug' that will allow you to download YouTube vids. Then you need a FLV player to play them locally (there is one called 'FLV Player' which is pretty good).

I would use VLC to play them. It plays everything!

I assume you are running Windows? If so use the following link to get VLC:

yep, VLC = good for FLVs.
it's likely that the inbuilt flash player on youtube itself will remain cached, but the videos it calls on will likely be re-streamed each time you revisit the page - but not each time you play the video without leaving the page. there's a temporary buffer, but it's very temporary.

It`s all too testicle for me, boys. I`m not IT minded at all, I`m afraid.
But I think the short answer to my original q. is yes, transferring from youtube to My Favourites and playing from there will use the same mb`s up as originally used to play it on youtube.
I think
Be a lot easier if I up my broadband allowance from 2GB to 7GB.

I find it hard to use less than 60GB in the first 2 weeks

*almost*
most of the text/pics on the web page will be cached, the video *player* in the web page is cached, but the video that gets played will be downloaded again.
FYI cached means it's stored on your own computer in a temporary place so it doesn't need to be re-downloaded.
Kev... 60GB. Shite. me and the flatmate rarely cross 20gb per month, and we do like our tv shows and music

I have a 46" 1080p LCD. So I download all my shows in 1080P or 720P, at 1-2GB per episode it tends to burn the bandwidth up pretty fast!

Out of interest, what shows do you watch and where do you get them?
I'm limited to 6GB per month so I really have to restrain myself and download movies/episodes only as I need them.

get a program like utorrent from
http://www.utorrent.com, and search away at
http://isohunt.com for torrents to download.
naturally, you must only use this for legitimate means

I've always used azureus though I have heard good things about utorrent. I like that azureus allows you to schedule speed throttling - useful for those of us on optus' shifty off-peak plans. Never tried isohunt, but can usually find what I'm looking for on piratebay or torrentspy.
I was looking more for recommendations on good series to download, ahem, legally purchase. Anything new that's worth a look? I'm hanging out for season 4 of BSG in the new year

That's really good. I've been looking forward to it. What is BSG???

BSG = Battlestar Galactica
I hadn't heard about the telemovie on this week, thanks Kev. Series 4 doesn't begin in earnest until April next year though.

Ah. The original was such a rip-off of Star Wars. They even used the same font in the opening credits.
I can't say the new one does anything for me.

Yes well, Razor has been highly anticipated! It is actually considered part of S4 for whatever reason. They are saying the story line will pick back up April next year but there is alot of secrecy around it. Either way it is officialy the last seaon. The spin off ("Caprica") will start in 2009 after BSG finishes, though I am not sure I like the story line (Caprica was originaly pitched as having no connection, but the people from BSG were looking to do a spin off and adaopted this), I will give it a go.
