I brewed a Tooheys special lager early last month with the same way as all the other brews iv done. The taste test from the fermentor was not good but I gave it the benifit of doubt that it would improove like all the other ones iv done.
Cracked the keg last night and just could not drink it. I checked for floating infection and all looked good. It was clear and not the best smell but nothing that bad.
Long story short it got chucked as I only have 2 x kegs and carnt let it sit to see if it gets better.
Think il stay with the ones that I know.
Here I was thought 2 kegs are enough, now the fridge is empty until I chill & carb up another one.
Think il get another keg just in case.

If you suspect an infection you should probably make sure you are extra thorough with your cleaning of both the fermentor and keg.

The Tooheys Old kit is drinkable if you do not use the yeast, otherwise I do not like the Tooheys kits at all.

I think il stick with good old coopers draught kits and modify from there.

Avoid Tooheys, they are crap. EDIT IMHO

I bought some Special Lager tins for $3.50-4.00, added 1kg LDM and brewed thinking it could be a cheap swiller for Mowing etc......Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too bitter IMO and yes they do smell funny.

Try Morgans, they make a nice kit.

Cheers

Tooheys Dark Ale kit is good - a mate and I brew it pretty regularly, but mostly use S-04 yeast.
