OK guys, I need your honest Aussie opinion.

I stopped at my local beer distributor today............[STOP]

In the conservative/heavily Republican state of Pennsylvania where I live here in the USA, one can purchase beer only at two places: "Beer Distrubutors" and bars [translation: pubs, locals]. At a Beer Distrubutor, you can purchase beer by the case [24 bottles/cans] or in kegs. At a bar, you can purchase beer in 6-packs [no more than 2 at one time], but the prices at bars for a 6-pack are almost the same as for a case at a distributor. You see, the state runs the beer business in Pennsylvania. Back to our story......

...........and purchased a case of Toohey's New. I've never seen it before, and only know of it by being a member of this forum. I've seen it mentioned in passing.

So far, I've had two bottles. I'd like to know what the Aussie beer drinkers think of it before I relate my opinion. This could be fun.

Please accept our apologies. You coulda probably got a case of something decent for the same price.

New is your typical megaswill. Nothing offensive, nothing too challenging or complex for the average punter. I'd drink it in preference to a number of other beers.

Yeh, it's certainly drinkable if there is nothing else better on offer but not a great beer.

If I'm going to drink anything Tooheys, I prefer Old.

It tastes pretty bloody awful to me, unless I've already had 4 or so beers.

Aside from that, it give shocking hangovers.

Pooheys New.

Tooheys Old is where its at.

What the states has something besides Foster's???
Super-chill Tooheys New & it isn't half bad if you drink it before it starts to warm too much. It's a mega-swill, but better than VB .. Vile Bile... drain cleaner because you dump them out.

Too bad they don't have Tooheys Old, or Cooper's Pale, or Barons Wattle Seed.....

Honestly I think it is the worst beer in AU. If VB did not give you such gut rot it would be preferred to this swill IMHO.

OK, so I get the picture that Toohey's New is to Australia what Miller, Coors and Budweiser are to the US. I suspected that, but wanted to get honest opinions.

I found it rather unremarkable myself - not bad enough to pitch down the drain, not notable enough to buy again. THAT SAID.........it does remind me a bit of Miller High Life, and much, much better than Coors.

You can tell the difference between Bud/Miller/Coors?

They all tasted the bloody same to me the last time I was in the US.

I admit they are not the best beers in the world, but surely in a blind taste test you could easily pick which was which?

Never mind Tooheys New, it's like most of the other Aus megaswill lagers, with no distinguishing characteristics of any sort.
It's innocuous and characterless, not worth the effort for a real beer lover.

Tooheys Old, on the other hand, is actually a very nice dark ale, and well worth drinking.
My golf club has 12 taps on the bar, and only Tooheys Old is worth buying.

Kev, 1 sip of each was all I had. Didn't feel like a mouthful. Would you?

Honestly, if I am out at the Brewers game, it is the middle of summer and 32C with 85% humidity, and I want something to wash my bratwurst down with, I would much rather one of these beers than any "premium" import or micro. I believe these beers do have a time and place that they can be enjoyed. I also believe there are large differences between them. Likewise I guess if I were at the GABA and I wanted a beer to go with my sausage roll, I would probably want something like a XXXX Gold or Carlton Mid.

I may not want to drink these beers all the time, call me a beer snob, but I don't think they deserve to be as big as they are.

Well, actually I can. Millers uses corn as their primary adjunct to barley and I find it generally sweeter. Bud uses rice, which to me leaves a cleaner, drier taste that I prefer in light lager. I really don't know what Coors uses - doesn't matter, because I really can't drink the stuff. In all honesty, it's been a long time since I had regular Coors. When I think of Coors, Coors Light comes to mind.

Yeah, New has it's place, mainly at the bottom of the list, but on a very hot day when there's nothing else on offer it does the job.
As said before, Parrot, Old is a lot better. I reckon it's one of the best megaswills on offer here.

For what it is worth, I agree that Old is the best megaswill outside the Coopers brewery.

Agreed, nothing special, nothing terribly offputting either.

Not a favourite at all, but drinkable.

What are the other eleven? Let me guess... several different varieties and duplicates of the usual suspects?

Tooheys Old is a great mega-brew, & you can regularly get cartons for less than $40. I usually get one to suppliment my craft brews in the fridge.
Give me a pub with Tooheys Old and Coopers Pale on tap and I can be happy.
