Hoegaarden Wit Clone?

Has anybody out there got a Hoegaaden Wit beer recipe using grains?

I would really like to try one out.

and can you get some of the ingredients from Melb. and where? eg curocao orange? :? :shock:

getting curacao orange proved to be very difficult up here (Qld). I gave up before I succeeded.
I have tried using dried sweet orange peel. Result was quite drinkable, but quite different to Hoegaarden. (Used Hoegaarden yeast)
Was able to find curacao essence in a HBS (went under the name Triple Sec essence, or something similar). Used that. Again, result was quite drinkable, but quite different to Hoegaarden. But I didn't use unmalted wheat in the recipe (only malted wheat and malted barley), and perhpas most importantly, I didn't use any unmalted oats (necessary for both the white cloudiness and the mouthfeel of the result). But, if what you want is EXACTLY Hoegaarden, this is available at $16 a fourpack from the local :-)

My next attempt at this will use the zest of a kaffir lime, and I will probably go to the trouble of the oats thing (but need other grains as well, because no enzymes in rolled/cut oats).

btw Remember that you are looking for coriander SEED, not fresh/dried coriander leaves (commonly called cilantro overseas).

Got a hoegarden style attempt brewing at the moment.

Recipie I've gone with is pretty much as Matty posted here a while back with a few variations.

Cascade Spicy Ghost Wheat Kit 1.7kg
1.5kg Tin Liquid Wheat Malt Extract (Coopers)
1kg Honey
200gms Dextrose
50g Halletau Hops
25g Ground Corriander
Peel of one Orange (Grated)
Kit Yeast

Boiled honey and 30g of hops for 30 minutes.
Added 10g Corriander and 10g hops for another 10 minutes.
Added Orange Peel, rest of hops and Corriander to boil for another 5 minutes. Strained liquid and added to Kit and malt extract.

Put this down last weekend so will check how its going this weekend. Strong smells (citrus?) from the fermentor currently.

Not real sure how it will turn out but worth a go. The missus has been wanting to try it for a while so finally gave in. 1st time I have boiled hops (normally just use the teabag) so not feelin as confident as usual.

Realise you can't get an exact copy without the unmalted wheat (and using kits), but was never trying too. Just enjoy the bit of experimenting. Hopefully it will be enjoyable and all will be well.

I did a quick Google search and it seems that Hallertauer and/or Saaz are the go.

Checked brew sunday morning. Was still working away solidly. Will be racking Tuesday night I'd say. Smell seems to have died away a bit (can actually walk into the room now!).
Will let you know.

I love Hogaarden and I will attempt a clone soon.

I was looking at some of these recipes and thinking, what gives it it's creaminess?

I'm fairly new to this (hoegaarden clone 3rd brew) so correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's the torrefied wheat and oats gives it its creaminess. I followed the Grain and Grape mini-mash recipe but added 150gm oats & 100gms carapils to steep (hoping it'll help retain head which apparently is affected by the orange oil). Also added 300gm honey to fermenter.

Just put it down yesterday evening and is bubbling away nicely (although not quite as vigorously as I thought the k-97 yeast would go. Head stories of volcano like krausens with wheat beers before). Smells a bit orange-y at the moment but I believe this'll subside over time.
