Golden Syrup Ale by gmax

1 can coopers real ale
brew enhancer 2
300 grams golden syrup

started brewing on the 7 may,2005 at 3pm

1)made up the mixture in tap hotwater
but made the mistake of filling up 22 litres
of hot tap water instead cold(DOH!)

2)pitched the yeast and stirred and closed
the lid.
3) temperture was off the scale DOH!, OG 1042
4)large scum ring had formed by the next morning
5)by monday and even bigger scum ring wohoo
and fg was 1020
6)on the tuesday the fg reading was 1012
7)on the wednsday the fg reading was 1012
8) decided to bottle, nice taste test, the bottleing
Has been good, however i only bottled 13 litres since
because it was all i had to spare.
9) glad i bottled on the wedsday because on thursday i noticed
some white blobs floating around on what was left of the brew,
could had been infection i don't know,
but i chucked it out, and cleaned

10) on the this weekend i tried one of my 700mls PET bottles
the taste was well fine, it had been in the fridge of for
few hours, the taste was nice, crisp,
poured out a big head though

but there was no golden syrup taste, there didn't seem to be
any taste at all, doh!,
The rest of brew are in 2 litre plastic

bottles washed and steralized before using and primed with some
brown sugar,(i will try glass bottles one day when i can afford
A stand capper)
11) conclusions,

A)I am hoping for the ale to mature a bit more over the next
few weeks, but it looks a bit thinish.(maybe too much water at start)

B)I notice when i was bottling and putting on new screw tops that

beer is nice and frothy on the top but after a few minutes it dies

down and looks like flat beer,( i keep shaking the bottles each day
don't know if i'm supposed to do that or not)

c)this is fun experimenting making homebrews

D)i don't want to buy commercial beer no more,

cheers

gmax,

Sounds like you're a true convert now

Just beware of adding too much golden syrup.

See Geoff's No.41 Bockin' Good Beer at http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/ourhomebrews.html

Cheers,

g'day oliver,
yes i only used 300 grams of golden syrup and i boiled that first .
I know i tend to want to drink my brew after a couple days, but i shouldn't really,
I"m trying a coopers draght beer next weekend, after the dark ale is complete,
But i'm really enjoying my homebrewing, as i made myself.

cheers

I brewed a similar recipe with a Coopers Draught kit, 1kg of Coopers Brew Enhancer #1 and 300g of Golden Syrup. Tasted great from the first few weeks but with little discernable Golden Syrup taste. Now after 4 months, if anything there is slightly more bitterness on the back of the tongue. Carbonation in the stubby is good as is retention but I don't pour into a glass.

I added 630gms of Golden syrup to a Coopers Stout kit along with a bag of Brew Enhancer 2. Made it up to 19lts and it is absolutely sensational!! (And about 8.6% alc) It adds a flavour that's hard to describe...bit burnt...bit bitter....but whatever it is you want more of it!!
