Well with good advice from Kev, I did my first full ALL EXTRACT BOIL yesterday at work. :D :D

Here it is:

Did the recipe up on Beersmith as a German Pilsner??? All the figures came up right as that style...

3kg Unhopped Lager Malt Extract
.5kg Cara Pils (steeped 30min @ 67c)drained then(re-steeped 10min @ 67c)
.5kg Light Dry Malt
20gr Galena(12.7%) @ 60min
20gr B Saaz(8.2%) @ 20min
10gr B Saaz(4.0%) @ 2min
s-189 yeast(pitched @ 20c)

Fermenting at 11c

Probably used wrong style bittering hop but research showed it can be used for all styles of Beer? 8)

Cheers

Galena is a very neutral bittering hop in my experience, it is great for bittering mostly any style. The B Saaz is great and this will no doubt be your best beer yet! I would give it 2 weeks at 11C then diacetly rest for 3-4 days depending on temps. For lagering, I would just leave it in the keg in the fridge at 4-6C for as long as you can hold out ;)

Thanks Kev,

I'm sure it will be a goodie, tasted nice after I checked OG(1054).. :D

Still havn't got to that keg stage yet    ... But will just rack off and store? It works well brewing at work as I can store in Coolroom at a constant 4 degrees..

Maybe I can hold out till I get the kegs, could be my 'First Full Extract Boil Keg Christening Beer'

Nah I would use a cheap K&K brew or two to get used to your taps, save this one for when you get it all worked out and pouring nicely ;)

How long did it take you to get your setup right? I noticed you havn't really been kegging all that long...

Maybe I could just bottle it if I havn't yet got a system by 2 months time? 8)

I've got all the gear sorted out with ross@craftbrewer, just have to wait till mid August for my Birthday, I think some birthday money should nearly cover the setup plus then I could chip in some money for an extra 2 kegs(to have 4 in total)... :)

Gotta admire the prepared. :D :D

BTW, envious that you not only can brew at work, but work has all the big pots & burners to do so. Did the apprentice chef have to do the lifting?

Cheers,
Greg

Took me 2-3 kegs to get all the kinks worked out. How long does it take you to drink that much beer?

Yes, it worked quite well actually, as long as you've got everything prepped up ready for the boil there is not really a drama.. I just couldn't believe how long it takes to try to quickly chill down 20ltrs of hot wort, I filled up big wash up sink and went through 10kg ice and then had to put it in the coolroom for about 30 mins to get it down to 20c.

I just gave the apprentice some hops to chew on(Galena) to keep her quiet, she is only little so I couldnt expect her to lift the big pot.. (galena yuk, I throw 1pellet in my mouth the other night and had a small chew, I recommend not to chew on Galena :( :( )

I guess I'll bottle that batch then in a couple months, 2-3kegs x 19ltr = 57 litres of beer/9ltrs a carton = 6.3 cartons...

Prob 1.25 cartons a week, so about 5 weeks to drink that much, it would probably be in storage to long hey?

Thats 5 weeks from mid-august....

Storage too long? Are you serious? It s a lager and AFAIK it is commonly accepted that (within reason), they get better with time! ;)

Just need to make sure it is stored properly! You can lager it in a cube until you get the keg, there are many posts her about how to do that.

The last 2 cartons will be the best tasting ones...Try to put a couple of cartons away in the coolroom (around 4C if possible) and you'll be rewarded by the swiss lager yeast in a couple of months...
