There is a store opening here soon.Just wondering if anyone has seen one or has any thoughts on this store,if you've seen one.As far as I can see you go there and brew some beer at the store from one of the recipes they offer, which look pretty good. Then you book in to go back and bottle or keg your brew when its finished fermenting and take it home.I assume there is a fee for this. How much I wonder? And do they have supplies for those who wish to Brew at home?Anyway I thought it was a good idea from those who thought of it to offer something to people who dont have the room to brew at home.Going by the website they have,U-Brew It is a franchise store so I thought maybe one of you lads out there may have one in your area.I'd be interested to here your thoughts .

It costs about $20-$30 per carton and the minimum buy is about 8 cartons, I think. It is all cold filtered and should be stored in the fridge or coolroom. They have about 100 different beers that can be brewed.
Still quite expensive I think, especially when you still have to wait until your beer is brewed and then bottle it. You also have to supply your own bottles....
There shouldnt be any reason why you wouldnt have enough room to brew, even if its just a fermenter in your bedroom with Kit, malt, spec grains, hops. To easy.

The one near me doesn't help HBer's.
I asked them if I could keep my fermenter in their cool room and filter/bottle there.
No go..... not interested. I thought it was a great idea...oh well.

Thanks for the replies.I'm glad I posted the topic cause when it does open I'll have saved myself a trip in there.By the sound of it from here and others I've spoken to U-Brew it is a waste of space.I think I'll stick to buying my supplies from the very small brew shop thats here already and getting my advice from this excellent site.
Now to be totally off the topic,my wife said yesterday after i'd just taken her and the kids on a holiday,"You might have to give up your keg system and brewing,(which will not be happening!)it takes up too much of your time and your not spending enough time with us."F#@ked aren't they.

Lose the wife, get another fermenter. If nothing else, it's cheaper.

It may come as no surprise, but I'm not a big fan of this mob! But I must confess that I've never actually brewed a beer at the local U-Brew It. I have tasted a Scottish Ale that came from there and it wasn't bad - from a purely technical perspective, it tasted like a good steeped grains with extract brew - or a beer that had a good malt profile but was fermented with a couple of packets of Coopers ale kit yeast - if you get my drift.
Besides, I'm a brewing tragic - I get as much pleasure out of making beer as I do drinking the stuff!
Cheers,
TL

Brew-By-You closed down early this year in Hobart after operating for a few years. Reason being it wasn't getting enough support during the cold season which is a good six months in Tassie. They had many recipes to choose from and used LME in 44 gallon drums as a brewing medium. The brewery was well set up with an obvious big capital outlay so it needed all year round support to make it worthwhile. I had them make up some beer to fill kegs when I was running behind with H/B operations at home. It was a handy if you needed to stock up for Xmas, parties, or whatever and it was quite a good drop. I believe rising prices on malt and hops impacted on trying to manage the cost of beer at reasonable levels to make it a worthwhile to customers. Sorry to see them go but maybe this type business would probably be better suited to the warmer states up north. Setting up to aim the product at the consumer market would be a costly exercise with no guarantees and not for the faint hearted. Sorry T/L I like brewing beer to but sometimes get overwhelmed by demand.

I wonder if they sold the equipment after they closed?
One of those kettles would be great!

They are after $350K to set one of these up and I think about $150K of that is the kettles and related equipment. Seems like a lot of money, commercial or not.

Geoff had a Kettle from the brewery in the shop for sale which eventually disappeared. I never asked the price of it so I have no idea of it's worth. I could be wrong but going on memory by the plumbing setup, I thought the Kettles were heated by steam. You must have been in the brewery Taz did you ever remember seeing a boiler. I remember the lagged pipes going to the row of Kettles they had in there.
