The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
TWOC got some bitter orange peel in last week. I called on Thursday and the postie dropped it off on Friday. Can't beat that.
Can someone confirm once and for all that Torrefied wheat is the same thing as Sanitarium puffed wheat?
Someone mentioned that it is the same as Weeties, which is completely different to puffed wheat.
This recipe thread is confusing

They don't look the same, they don't taste the same, and the Sanitarium puffed wheat is 3 times the price of Torrefied wheat. Can someone confirm once and for all that Torrefied wheat is the same thing as Sanitarium puffed wheat?
I wouldn't say they're the same thing.
Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
Thanks, having trouble finding it in Perth. I went into brewcraft and they had never even heard of it.longbody wrote:They don't look the same, they don't taste the same, and the Sanitarium puffed wheat is 3 times the price of Torrefied wheat. Can someone confirm once and for all that Torrefied wheat is the same thing as Sanitarium puffed wheat?

Try a health food shop or if you're lucky you may find it in the health food section of Coles or Woolies which I think would be a cheaper option, if they have it.

Hoping to finally put this one down shortly.Danzar wrote: Last night I tasted a batch of the latest (v.5) and it's so close it's not funny. It's hard to tell the difference. I've updated the main recipe from the OP, but here is what I did.
1 x 3kg can ESB wheat.
250 grams dry wheat malt.
14 grams Fuggles (10 min boil)
14 grams Goldings (15 min boil)
20 grams dried bitter orange peel (ordered from Grain and Grape)
30 grams cracked coriander seeds (make sure it has a nice citrusy smell)
2 grams cumin seed
500 grams torrefied wheat, steeped for 30 mins in hot water then sparged.
White Labs WLP400 Belgian Wit yeast (the Wyeast equivalent is the 3944).
last (hopefully) question.
1 x 3kg can ESB wheat - Is this the ESB Bavarian Wheat?
That is the only one I can find....
Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
By the way my recipe tasted nearly identical to thisbilgerat wrote:Flux and emnpaul posted recipes for hogaarden AG back in October, can you blokes let us know how they went, Im thinking of giving a hoey AG a go myself

I still haven't managed another attempt since my last Hoegaarden but will be following up soon with another variant.
By the way TWOC has the orange peel back in stock.

Ok, this one is in the fermenter.BadSeed wrote:

Pitching temp is a trap for young players. I put 15l of water in the freezer and got it to just above freezing.
I got the temp to 26 using the cold water and pitched the, almost busrting, yeast at 24.
That ESB Bavarian wheat doesn't smell too good when you open the tin.
Oh, and torrefied wheat is nothing like weeties or puffed wheat.
Re: Mission accomplished!
Hey there matey, just wondering what your reasoning was for sparging steeped grains here? After all mostly the wheat is only adding flavor not fermentable sugars isn't it?BadSeed wrote: 500 grams torrefied wheat, steeped for 30 mins in hot water then sparged.
I'm no expert but I would be careful doing this as you could inherently bring tannins into your steeping process.

I always sparged spec grain as an extract brewer, and now that they get added to my mashes, they still get sparged.
With a simple, single batch sparge, you're not going to be running the tannin gauntlet. Would perhaps be a different story if you were sparging 8 times, however.

It wasn't my recipe I just quoted it from earlier inthe thread.Flux wrote:Hey there matey, just wondering what your reasoning was for sparging steeped grains here? fwiw I didn't sparge.
Fermentation started almost immediately, still bubbling every 20 seconds and the biggest krausen I have ever seen.

Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
Could any one point me in the right direction to find torrified wheat around north Brisbane. I have checked the hbs, health food shop, woolies and coles and I can't find it anywhere. Has anyone been able to find any in this area?

CraftBrewer will have it, but they're on the south side of Brissy.aydanrogers wrote:Could any one point me in the right direction to find torrified wheat around north Brisbane. They do mail order, if that helps.
Otherwise, I'm not familiar with Brissy.

Thankyou very much for that. I'm thinking of going there tomorrow, I need to get more hops anyway!

Coming in late here, but in a follow-up to some previous posts of mine in this thread, it appears Grain and Grape has dried Curacao orange peel: http://www.grainandgrape.com.au/product ... ts_id=8217
(Link correct at time of writing, or do a search from http://www.grainandgrape.com.au.)

Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
Thanks for that Oliver, it's good to know. I've tried a few different citrus substitutes, which all made good beer but I haven't been able to nail that Hoegaarden taste as yet. I would consider curacao orange peel and grains of paradise pretty much essential if you really want to clone it.

Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
I have had this one in the fermenter a few days, I have tasted it while checking the SG and there is an overpowering taste of coriander, I used 30g of coriander and 2g of cumin as suggested in the recipe, can I add anything at this stage to tone it down a bit, perhaps adding some more orange peel or addition of "sweeter"hops may help, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks Gary
Re: The great Hoegaarden clone - in progress
All I can suggest is to let it age and mellow. I didn't read back through the whole thread but it must have been good.
