You can get vanilla flavours from oaked beer.

New American oak in particular gives vanilla flavours. I use it regularly in big Russian Imperial Stouts

Edit - it takes time to draw out flavours from oak. Months plus. I've managed to get the vanilla flavour in 2 weeks using a huge amount of fresh American oak dominoes. In general though I leave the beers in keg with oak for 6-12+ months.

I've used vanilla extract to make an oaked vanilla bourbon porter. Was very nice.
