Fat Yak?

Postby Lachy » Tuesday Dec 22, 2009 8:33 pm

G'day all...

After sinking a pint or two of this brew at The Local in Port Melbourne on sunday, I'm eager to have a crack at doing a kits and bits version of it myself.

I was thinking of starting with a Coopers Australian Pale Ale, Real Ale or Lager can as the base, then adding LDME, some crystal and Cascade and Nelson Sauvin to provide the correct hop profile. However, I'm a bit unsure about quantities and boil times. Any takers?

Cheers for that. I'm quite surprised at the large amount of Nelson Sauvin at flameout. Looks very tasty indeed...

So for a kits and bits, and based on your recipe, I'm thinking something like this...

Coopers Real Ale
1kg LDME
100g crystal, steeped
20g cascade @ 10 min
8g nelson sauvin @ 10 min
30g nelson sauvin @ flameout
US05

Made to 23l.

Thoughts?

As I posted earlier....I got to much NS. So I would drop that back a bit at flameout. Im still playing with the idea of using POR for the 60min addition in my second batch of this. Will report back in the New Year on how this went.
The kit recipe looks good :D

Lachy

Interested to here how this goes, don't mind Fat Yak on tap but the stubbies I've bought left me dissapointed.
I also seem to be using Coopers Real Ale as a base kit more often now (could be because it always seems to be on special here).

Nothing interesting to see here, move along.

Well, let's drop the NS at flameout by half...

Coopers Real Ale
1kg LDME
100g crystal, steeped
20g cascade @ 10 min
8g nelson sauvin @ 10 min
15g nelson sauvin @ flameout
US05

Made to 23l.

beercraft at richmond were finalising a kit for Fat Yak a month back when I was in there. I tasted it and it's pretty much Fat Yak!

Hi,

I have just come home from Brewcraft and I bought the Fat Yak kit - I am stoked cause I love this stuff I can't wait to put it down...

Here is the recipe:

Black Rock East India Pale Ale Tin
1 kg Light Dry Malt
2x 15g Cascade Hop Bags
25g Nelson Sauvin Hop Pellets
US 05 Safale

Boil 2ltrs of water, add the 2 cascade hop bags and 12.5 grams of the Nelson Sauvin Hop Pellets, simmer for 15 mins. For the last 5 mins of the simmer add the rest of NS hops, turn off heat and let stand for 10mins - strain into fermenter.

Hope this helps, I have been looking everywhere for this recipe!

Cheers,

Paul.

Cheers for that, mate.

That certainly looks pretty tasty. I reckon I'll do the same, but I will sub in the coopers real ale as it's what I have on hand.

It's not Fat Yak, rather a recipe of my own making. After 4 brews of my Twisted Gut APA, which were much enjoyed, I thought it was time to try something a little different. After all, variety is the spice of life.

This brew is currently underway:

American Pale Ale
23.00 L
Estimated OG: 1.051 SG
Estimated IBU: 46.4 IBU

Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.9 EBC) Grain 82.30 %
Munich 2 (25.0 EBC) Grain 10.29 %
Crystal Dark (260.0 EBC) Grain 2.47 %
Crystal Malt - 60L (Thomas Fawcett) (118.2EBC) Grain 2.47 %
Crystal Medium (145.0 EBC) Grain 2.47 %
25.00 gm Magnum [14.00 %] (60 min) (First Wort HopHops 38.4 IBU
35.00 gm Cascade '07 [6.30 %] (10 min) Hops 8.0 IBU
35.00 gm Cascade '09 [7.40 %] (0 min) Hops
20.00 gm Chinook [11.40 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops
1.00 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
12.00 gm Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) (Boil 60.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs American Ale US-05 (Fermentis #US-05) Yeast-Ale
Mashed 60 minutes at 66ºC

I could have sworn that Fat Yak uses Amarillo....

If I was putting together a recipe, I would use one of the many JS Golden Ale recipes and dry hop with loads more Amarillo.

Fat Yak is definitely cascade and nelson sauvin - says so here - Linky

And Warra, nice looking beer that one, i love combining cascade and chinook. Did so in my 1st AG. Am brewing another of these soon.

Two recipies that I've brewed and both were good and close to the original, particularly for my first ever devised clone recipe and being largely K&K.

Cooper's Pale Ale (Second time with Morgan's Canadian Light).

Cooper's BE 2

15g of Nelson Sauvin Hops and 12g of Cascade boiled for 15minutes in two litres of water only and then add to fermentor with BE2 and concentrate and made to 23l

Dry hop with 12G of Cascade on day 3

The US56 failed me on this first brew so I threw in the cooper's kit yeast and I was more than happy with the final brew.

With the Canadian light I dropped all the hops back to 7g and used a successful US56. This was a much closer clone after two weeks but lost too much of the hop flavour after two months.

For a third attempt I would boil the hops with some malt and bring them back up to the original amounts. I not sure about the kits, both were good, it is hard to say if the kit made the second one better or the yeast.

Cheers

Tried the Fat Yak #2 after 2 weeks in the bottle and this thing has some balls. Super hoppy....not sure about it just yet.
Was at the brew store and he said that of the two recipes brewcraft are putting out, the first one is a bit more like the real thing.
Haven't given up on it though...only early days. If anyone else has had a crack at one of their fat yak recipes I'd love to hear how it's going/it went...

Thank Bobbioli. That's the recipe. Maybe it's just me but a few friends think it's strong but they really like it. I'm coming around to it.
