Brigalow Ginger Beer kit - has "scum" in bottle

Postby rd_taylor » Saturday Nov 04, 2006 8:51 am

Hi!

I recently made a Brigalow Ginger Beer kit as per the instructions - didn't add anything extra.

I bottled it into brand new PET bottles 5 days ago.

If I check the bottles, there seems to be a "scum" of some sort floating around near the top of the liquid. If I gently shake the bottle, these chunks come adrift, and float down toward the bottom of the bottle. There's nbopt a huge amount, just a few chunks...

It seems not all the bottles have this, but most do. I'm just wondering if this is an infection, or if this is normal with ginger beer.

Thanks
cheers

The first thing you need to know is that the scum in your bottle is Brigalow... :)

Seriously though, it is probably just yeast, and I wouldn't be concerned about it.

So...I gather that Brigalow GB is a dirty word 'round here...

I bought it before I discovered this forum...anyways...if it turns out crap I'll dispose of it thoughtfully 8-)

Next time I'll buy one of the kits recommended hereabouts, and jazz it up with some of the recipe suggestions.

thanks
cheers

It's good that someone brought it up, i have similar scum rings in my bottles that i did about a month ago. I thought it could have been a cleanin stuff up cause i tried using my dishwasher to clen the plastics (using seriliser rather than detergent of course)

They still taste fine so i didn't worry about it :P
I never said i didn't like kids, I just can't eat a whole one :D

Some people like Brigalow, most don't.

It should be fine to drink (it is still homebrew), but there are so many better options out there that are worth exploring.

It's just the yeast from the brew. I did a brigalow brew about 3 months ago and since then I ran out of bottles for one of my beer brews so the brigalow had to go!!
