ginger beer using coopers lager can

Postby jmnug2 » Saturday Aug 02, 2008 3:22 pm

Am i crazy for thinking of trying the idea? Maybe but i'll probably do it anyways.
Any one tried this?
I was going to just add 600-700 g of fresh ginger and some sugar, cinamon and cloves to a can of coopers lager.
I just hope that the beer taste from the lager and the ginger work nicely rather than making some horrible spicy beer monster.

I'd probably boil everything except the can for an hour or so then add the can at flameout so the malt doesn't burn.

I haven't tried it yet, but I've been toying with the idea of doing a ginger beer with a kilo of LDME added and some Cascade to get some citrus flavours happening... I reckon that would marry nicely with ginger. I'm not sure Coopers Lager would quite fit, but given that it's a pretty mild beer, odds are it wouldn't be overpoweringly hoppy.

Ginger beer with 1kg of LDM is bloody awful. I wouldn't recommend it.

Agreed. Made one batch using LDME and some caramalt. Not my cup of tea. This is one case where sugar is a better option than malt. It masks the ginger flavour/aroma too much for my liking.

Cascade would be interesting tho, steeped or dry hopped but i dont think you want any IBUs in a giner beer, but thats just IMO.

Well scratch the idea of using LDME then...

I thought it might give the beer some more ooomph, but I'm thinking now to steer well clear of it. Cheers for the heads up.

The hops would only be employed in a very short boil, or even purely at flame out. I'm looking for flavour, aroma and negligible IBUs.

If you want flavour, you'll need at least 10-20mins of hops. It's only really after 20 that the bitterness comes forward.
