SEMCO as in Schultz's engineering and manuf co (Bundaberg) may now be trading under different name...there is a pic of one in my avatar ( a 2 ton/hour model) ian

Has anyone got or used the Barley Crusher advertised on the Beersmith site. Seems a well made product for the money. Any comments about this grain mill would be appreciated.

Jaysus! My 10 Gallon batch of RIS uses around 15kg of grains - I'd need to set aside a day to do the grains and prey the blender doesn't crap itself!!

I applaud your patience....you'll grab a mill if/when you go all grain.

bout 30 minutes to do 5 kilos T/L. Curious way the blender works as it sucks the grain down the centre and pushes crushed grain up the sides, so small lots seem to work best.

I have one, but not the stainless model, but can highly recommend it.
My last brew I crushed 5 kg of grain in 6 minutes by using the handle.
The handle is rather long, and I'm thinking of drilling a hole closer to the spindle so that it will go a bit quicker yet.
The only thing is that you need to make a guard out of some thin plastic or card to keep the grain out of the gears. Then grinding is really easy. The gap is also easy to adjust.

Thanks for that warra. I was going to go the non-stainless mill, then I saw the stainless one. Do you know if it is easy to adapt for a drill?

Yeah, it should be. One of the rollers is driven from a 12 mm keyed shaft, so it should be very easy to run with a drill with a 13mm chuck.
There is a long thread on AHB about this mill. A lot of the guys/gals there run them with drills or various other motors eg washing machine etc.
However, as I said, I run mine by hand, and it is quite easy once the gear guard is in place. That's also covered in the thread on AHB, and I think there is even a template to make your own gear guard.

Unfortunately that means going to AHB, which seems to be a central gathering place of a lot of *highly opinionated people with excessively 'positive' views of themselves and of their brewing prowess. And anyone who disagrees with them, is berated and abused until they fall into line. And if they don't, a collossal back-stabbing and bitching session ensues.*
