Partial LCPA Clone

Postby pmclaren11 » Monday Jan 16, 2012 9:16 pm

Hi all,

I am hoping for some advice on my first partial. I have done a mini 9L BIAB AG before and it turned out pretty good. My equipment is limited at the moment so was thinking of using the 9L method taken from aussiehomebrewer and adding 1.5L of Liquid Dry Malt to make it up to 22L.

This is going to be for my 50th brew, to date I have mainly done kits and bits and a few all extract recipes that have turned out bloody good too.

This is pretty much a rip off of Dr Smurto's AG LCPA clone from this site (thanks!), thoughts, tweaks and anything else welcome. I am looking for something with a lower ABV.

Partial LCPA Clone (American Pale Ale)

Final Gravity (FG): 1.011 (°P): 2.8

Bitterness (IBU): 34.9 (Average)

1.5kg Pale Malt
1.5kg Liquid Malt Extract - Light
300g Caramunich I
500g Munich I

15 g Chinook (11.6% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
25g Cascade (7.8% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
20g Cascade (7.8% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
20g Chinook (11.6% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
20g Cascade (7.8% Alpha) @ 0 Days (Dry Hop)
20g Chinook (11.6% Alpha) @ 0 Days (Dry Hop)

0.0 g/L Whirlfloc Tablet @ 15 Minutes (Boil)

Single step Infusion at 67°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Fermented at 18°C with Safale US-05

Recipe Generated with BrewMate

I plan to start with 10L of water as per the aussiehombrewer instructions - can I get away with less with my grain bill?

Also, is a 60 min boil necessary for partial mash? Ideally I would like to do a 30 min boil and increase the Chinook to get my desired IBU.

Personally, I'd run with the figures from your previous brew.

I recommend you boil your wort for 60 minutes. It's purpose is not just for bittering, but also to drive off undesirable components from the wort. I'd also suggest you boil with the the most water your system is capable of managing. You'll produce better beer that way than with a more concentrated boil. I assume BrewMate makes allowances for the size of your boil?

Recipe looks nice, and should make a decent APA.

Thanks warra.

I don't see any function in brewmate that calculates smaller boil volumes. I am going to head to Big W tommorow and get a 19L pot for 20 bucks. That way I can start upping my mash amounts.

I will go with 10L strike water and then a couple of litres for dunking/sparging the bag.
