Double partial

Postby wrighty » Tuesday Feb 23, 2010 3:05 pm

Put down my first double batch yesterday.

2kg marris otter ale
200g Caraaroma
500g boiled rice (mashed)
2kg ldme
1 tin coopers cervesa
1kg raw castor sugar

Dont have beersmith yet but i think its a fairley big beer O.G.1055.

Mashed grains and rice for 60min @ 63 c into keggle added all other goodies, (dissoved first )also into keggle.
Made up to forty litre in the boil.
Hops schedule.

40g chinook @50min
30g cascade @20min
25g cascade@0 min
Got about 33-34 lt from boil , half into each fermentor topped up to 21lt each.
1lt starter of 1056 yeast into each.
Worried about the balance of this brew.
Your advice ,critique please brewers.

OG looks about right.

Cant comment on the IBU as i would need the AA% to do the calcs.

Flavour and aroma wise it looks a little light.

I don't know why you have added rice though. You wont taste it. Would have been much easier to add more sugar.

Rice is used to make very light coloured, light tasting lagers not pale ales with hop flavour.

When you say you added the grains to the keggle i assume you mean you mashed and then strained the liquid into the keggle and then rinsed? You didn't boil the grains.

Cheers Doc.
Yes was 60min mash of rice / grains batch sparge about 11-12lt into kettle.
Do you think maybe dry hop in secondary ? Cascade or Chinook ?
Added rice to sort of make it a bit drier finish .
Thanks for your advice.
Oh and the hop AA.
Chinook 11.2
Cascade 7.2

40L boil. Total IBU is 29 ignoring whatever the tin of cerveza is.

Instead of rice you could have simply added more sugar. Same result, less hassle.

Dry hop in secondary, my personal preference would be chinook.

Cheers Doc.
Yes first time ive used rice in a brew .Read that quit a few brewers on AHB use it up to 50% in fake lagers.
Different hop bill of course but a lot swear they can taste it in brews.
More for the asian style im led to believe.

I have no doubt they can taste it in lagers (fake or otherwise). It's a subtle flavour.

You won't in a hoppy pale ale though
