Substituting beer for water when making gravy...?
Substituting beer for water when making gravy...?
I was wondering whether anyone has tried adding beer instead of water when making gravy, or substituted beer for water when making up a stock for a soup when using stock cubes?
My mate tends to put vegemite in his gravy when making it, and occasionally put a tablespoon of vegemite in a casserole to boost the flavours, and i thought this could work the same way....
Any ideas?

Beer and lemon chicken is one of my favourite dishes. With the juices you can use a bit of gravy mix and make the most amazing gravy you have ever had
A simple pilsner or lager is best for this. I usually do it in the slow cooker. Simply dump a 375ml bottle over the top of it drizzle with olive oil and herbs then top with sliced lemons. Cook all day (only really need a couple hours but more is better) remove the juices and reduce with a bit of gravy mix in a saucepan.

Re: Substituting beer for water when making gravy...?
Was making bangers and mash the other day and decided to test this out.
Caramelised 2 onions (oil, butter, sugar and onions) for 45 mins.
Added 300mL dark ale, 300 mL of light beef stock and a bay leaf. Simmered for 20 mins until i had a rich glossy gravy.
And last night my partner made a bloody nice irish stew that was dead simple.
Lamb forequarter chops
Carrots, big chunks
Spuds, big chunks
Leek, 1cm thick slices
Vegie stock
Sprig of thyme
Salt and pepper
Cooked for 2 hours.
Washed down with enough guinness (HB) to class me as a binge drinker......

I just thought I'd add that I substitute beer anytime water is asked for.

You'd have to drink it in a hurry! Or keep it chilled. And I'm not swimming in 8*C pilsner.

Will have to suggest this topic to our local water carrier next time we need him to fill our water tanks up
