Little Creatures Pale Ale kit questions

Postby Lebowski » Wednesday Feb 02, 2005 6:21 pm

Just picked up one of these kits from westbrew (3rd brew) and had a couple of questions.

When do you add the hopps? (As far as I could figure out was just before pitching the yeast? ) And do you put the satchel in the fermenter?

Also what temperature is best for the safale yeast (I currently have it in the cellar at 18 degrees)

And lastly has anyone tried this kit before? (I went there to get some coopers sparkling ale but didnt look like they had any so decided to try this out)

From the Westbrew website:

Using Hops
Mix hops with 300ml of water, then bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. You can then add this directly to your brew, or strain it to use the liquid only as you prefer. Straining cuts down the sediment and slightly reduces the effect of the hops.

I'd follow the directions on the pack of hops. It shouldn't really matter too much which method you use; the 10 mins in boiling water is probably similar to 2 minutes being simmered.

I use a sterilised 12 cup coffee plunger (never used for coffee). You can use it for either hops or grain steeping.

Boil water for 10 minutes to sterilise then add hops and/or grain to plunger and soak for 10 minutes. Plunge the mix and pour the liquid into your wort.

Works a treat

Great idea.

Not sure how 'er indoors will feel about our coffee plunger being used to help make beer though.

But what she doesn't know ...

I was just thinking that it might work a treat,

A small one is worth about 30 bucks here so it is a lot of cake to stick out for a guess.

Glad to hear its cats, will give it a go this weekend

Thanks

My coffee plunger was as cheap as chips (Go-Lo, which is a discount store for those that are thinking Go-what) and saves money on bags or time to fish floaters out of boils.

Loving the coffee plunger idea. Will be jumping on that one. Has anyone seen Little Creatures kits in Sydney ? If they turn out anything like the real deal I'll be a happy sausage.

Let us know how your turns out Mr Lebowski (or is it The Dude ?)
