Site outages and upgrade notifications

Post by Oliver »

I thought I'd stop creating a new thread each time there's going to be an outage to the site or an upgrade.

So here is the first outage: I will be taking the site offline today (Friday, December 27) at 3pm AEDT to upgrade the forum.

At 3pm anyone logged in will be kicked off and no one will be able to log in.

The upgrade should take about 10 minutes.

Cheers,

Oliver

I've been beavering away on the forum and homebrewandbeer.com over the holidays and on the evening of Monday 12/1/15 the forum will be offline for a while I upgrade the site and enable a swag of features that will hopefully get you all excited!

Stay tuned.

I will be taking the site offline at 9.30pm AEST tonight.

If you are online at that time your login will be terminated.

The upgrade should be complete within an hour.

Well, that didn't exactly go to plan! We hit some major issues during the upgrade and the forum was offline for three days. The fix would have been quicker but sadly 10-hour days at work got in the way of me fixing it more quickly.

All I can do is apologise ... I tested the upgrade thoroughly beforehand, but something about the test environment is different from the live server and the database corrupted during the upgrade process. As a result I had to restore the backup I took immediately before the upgrade.

So the upgrade is on hold for now until I work out exactly what went wrong and how I can make sure it doesn't happen next time I do an upgrade.

Cheers,

Oliver

Haven't heard from Oliver in a while so not sure if he got around to this in the end or not. There were some issues we worked through but had yet to try a couple of things. He is possibly a little busy I'm guessing.

Not sure what glenn is talking about above, the IS running, I wouldn't be typing this message otherwise.

Yeah no dramas. Has been very quiet as you have noticed. Think everyone has gone into hiding.

Hi guys,

Yes, just been flat out for work so haven't had a chance to sit down and go through this properly. I have tried a couple of things but really need to block out a day where I don't have any interruptions (and don't have a beer, because that doesn't help concentration!).

So yes, it is still on the agenda and I will get to it ASAP.

Cheers,

It's only taken 10 years, but the site is now up to date and fully responsive (AKA works on phones and tablets).

There's an announcement here.

If you notice anything amiss, please let Oliver know via private message.

Cheers,

Oliver and Geoff
