Wishlist requests - We need you!

Postby Oliver » Wednesday Mar 16, 2011 9:47 am

Hi all,

Geoff and I are currently planning a major overhaul of the entire homebrewandbeer.com site (no changes to the forum, just the rest of it. For those of you who have only ever visited the forum and not the actual site, have a look here)

It will include a new look and structure, and updated information on brewing tips and methods, among other things. We're also going to ditch some of the stuff that's currently on the site, and integrate the forum more closly with the site itself.

So, if there's anything that you'd like to see added or removed, or you've got any general thoughts on how to improve the site, please let me know either by posting a message here or sending me a PM.

Perhaps you'd like a different structure or feel there should be more information on a particular topic. I can't promise you that we'll act on all suggestions, but they'll all be considered.

Also, if you would like to contribute an article or something you think may be of use on the new site, please let me know. You will, of course, be given credit for anything contributed.

Finally, I'm moving it to the Joomla content management system, which will make it much, much quicker and easier to update and maintain. So that will hopefully mean not having to wait two years to see tasting notes of Millennium Ale, for instance :D

Thanks in advance,

Oliver

Thanks for the idea about a tipping comp. That might be something that we look into down the track.

I've had some good ideas PMd to me, too.

Transferring the site and updating it is proving VERY timeconsuming and tedious. But the result will be a much improved site that's easier to update.

The immediate goal is to transfer and update the site's current contents, then add more sections and features.

If you've got any suggestions or want to contribute any articles, it's not too late!

Cheers,

Oliver

Oliver, is it possible to convince the television networks and the AFL to broadcast all matches live (ie no time-delay) on free to air TV, regardless of where they are being played? Or is this beyond the scope of the site upgrade?

Forgot about it at the time but should be pretty easy to set one up on OZtips.

Can we get a tab next to the 'quote' button, which would allow you to get to the top of that page again, make it quicker and easier to navigate the forum.

Hi Rotten,

I'll look into that. In the meantime, just hit the Home key

I use google translator form time to time but for some reason when i try to translate Speedies posts they don't come out any more legible.

I know it's asking a lot but is it possible to build something into this forum that magically translates Speedies posts so my head stops hurting trying to read them?

Yeah, perhaps a drunken-gibberish-haiku to English auto filter.

I've noticed he sometimes signs off his posts "enigma".

I think thats the code they are written in.

Sorry Speedie, I couldn't resist.

Cheers and Happy Easter

That's a throw-back to when Anna could still access this site from her work and decided he was a touch enigmatic. How insightful she was, all those months ago, to realise the code that we're just now being able to break.

Well, it's only taken me more than two years since I put out the call for ideas for the new website, but launch day isn't too far away now.

It's going to have some exciting new features and a few expanded sections.

One of the things I need help with though is some brew-day pictures to go with the how-to sections on homebrewing.

So if you already have some pictures or could take some to document your next brew day it would be very much appreciated.

I'm looking for photos of the process for:
* Kit and kilo and/or kit and bits.
* BIAB.
* Full mash brewing.

If you can help out, please let me know. You'd be given appropriate acknowledgement for the pics.

More photos are better than fewer, so I have plenty to choose from.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

One thing that I have noticed that other sites lack, and the internet generally, is a lack of specific ingredient information. Take Hops for instance, one can find some useful info on sites like http://byo.com/resources/hops, but the specific info is still a little general, at least for me. "Robust, pleasant and spicy" just doesn't cut it.

Maybe it's more of a forum idea, where people can post their experience with a particular ingredient. What kind of beers it went in, what boil time was used, and what flavours were imparted, and what other ingredients it goes well with.

Hi Saaz,

That's a pretty good idea, and I don't see any reason why there couldn't be a page with all hops on it (and pages for other ingredients perhaps), with the ability for users to add comments.

In the short term I'm just trying to get the site up and running, then I can easily tweak and add new sections.

The aim is to have an updated beer reviews section at the time of launch, where people can add and rate beers and add comments. Then a recipe page with similar ability will follow.

Unfortunately all good things take time. Also unfortunately I have a real job!

Cheers,

Oliver

The new site is getting close (and yes, I know I do keep saying that but it really is).

One thing I am missing and which I have no experience in is kegging. I don't suppose there would be a volunteer who could write up what would basically be an intro to kegging? Ideally the guide would include the pros and cons of kegging, equipment needed, different options and a basic how-to (with pics would be great, but not essential).

Even if there's someone who would be willing to do one of the components it'd be great.

Anyone?

Cheers,

Oliver
