La Trappe brews

Hi all,

I found these at my local Coles bottle-o. I grabbed one of their Wit and one of the Blonde. The wit was nice - a bit dryer than the more common examples and a touch sour-er. To me it tasted more like a hefeweizen/wit blend. Not bad, but my partial wit (based on Grumpy's recipe) is nicer IMO.
I was just suprised to find Trappist beers at the supermarket bottle shop - and they're fairly reasonably priced too. Anyone else had a try of these?

yeah, i've tried these. and for the price and availability, i couldn't complain. particularly the blonde. not quite as rich as a leffe blonde, but very similar.

also if i recall, at least one of them was bottle conditioned - think it was the wit. i've thought about attempting to culture the yeast in it.

It is the wit that is bottle conditioned.

I've still got 4 stubbies of 3944 culture to use up so I didn't bother...

La Trappe also make a Doppel, Tripel and a Quadrupel. Although these ones are only available at Vintage Cellars and 1st Choice. They are nice but lack the complexity of other trappist beers.

Had a 4 pack of the Blonde last week. Have to agree that while it was nice it wasn't a Leffe. Made in Holland so that could explain some of the difference, made for a slightly different palate.

I was lucky to try a friends Quadrupel last week. Very very nice.
Will pick one of these up at some stage for a winters night.
