Fat Yak

The good, the bad and the ugly of commercial beer and breweries, including microbreweries and craft breweries.

Fat Yak

Guys,

This is a new beer from Matilda bay Brewing (Fosters).

Not bad at all... similar to LC Bright Ale, but has a much bigger hoppy aroma. It does seam to be quite light in body though. I'd drink it again.. and again...

Just thought i'd give you the heads up.. i had it last frides, and they said that it only came in that day...

It's lovely stuff!

I had a few pints at Transport in Fed Square last week.

I'd disagree about being similar to LCBA - i'd compare it to JS Golden Ale. They've certainly gone mad with the dry hopping on this one!

Cheers,

Tim

Pretty enjoyable, it's on tap at the Platform Bar in Brisbane. From what I've read about it, Fat Yak is an attempt to break into the American style pale ale market that LCPA has been dominating.

I tried it on tap at the Lucky Coq in Prahran last week and was pretty impressed.

Hopefuly they will distribute it more widely in the near future - I'd happily drink it again.

I had it off tap at Transport yesterday afternoon in the sunshine with live music. I could drink it all day, great hoppy APA.

I don't normally want to buy overseas owned Matilda but I'd buy this beer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they owned by Fosters?

And yes, tried Fat Yack in the early hours of the morning this morning (3am) at crown casino, and found it nice, but lacking. Could be because I was comparing it to Alpha Pale Ale, and my pallet was so horrible shot by that point, so the hoppiness didn't come through as well.

I saw this in the bottlo today when I was looking for some Rooftop Red.

I was at a bottlo known for a fairly impressive range of quality beers (Corkers on Beaumont - in Newcastle) and I could not find Rooftop anywhere. They had Bohemian and Redback and Yak but no Rooftop.

Has the Yak replaced Rooftop? I didn't end up buying the 6-pack of Yak I had my eye on due to a range of reasons, but I shall certainly try it as soon as I can.

If anyone could let me know if Rooftop is still around I would be very much in their debt - what a great beer it is!

Cheers,

Have now tried Fat Yak. It's on tap at the Kent Hotel in Newcastle. Tastes pretty nice - hints of Little Creatures to it. Having said that, I could probably drink more Yaks in a single session.

Oh, and I found a single six-pack of Rooftop Red.

Phew.

Had a couple of schooners of this at the Greengate Hotel Restaurant in Killara last night.

It's a nice drink, but for my money it's lacking in the hop department for an American Pale Ale.
Similar body to LCPA, but less hop character.
Still the best beer to be had there last night, out of the 10 on tap.

I think I still prefer my HB version, particularly my house brew Twisted Gut APA (recipe on AHB data base).

I think it is like LCPA but brewed by accountants.

That said, this beer is a solid indication of change in the beer industry. Fosters obvioulsy wanted a stake in the monopoly that Little Creatures has had on the APA style... and seemingly Alpha Pale was not feasible to brew en masse.

I tried this brew at the Sydney Royal and must say was extremely impressed, especially seeing how it's brewed by Fosters.

Was like a cross in taste between an LCPA and a James Squire Golden Ale. I would definately drink it again.

I had this last night on tap at the Red Lion here in The Rat.

The hops were good perhaps overdone, was quite thin and watery with no real malt to back it up. Was an enjoyable beer, but could have been much better!
Prost and happy brewing!

I agree that more malt would be the missing piece from this puzzle.

An excellent observation.

aside from having some potential as a sessional (and even then I'd take the Bohemian), it really ain't special.

Bad news is that Rooftop has been discontinued for the moment...

Andrew from Matilda Bay came down here for a Hopsters meet. He said that the Flavour hop is Nelson Sauvin and the Aroma hop is Cascade.
Bit of info for those looking for a clone...

Thanks Taz.

My dad loves this beer, and I recently brewed him 2 batches of APAs to return a favour, I was using this as a ballpark target (but much bigger).
I will have to give it a shot with NS and Cascade. He was stoked with my Palisade APA effort though.

I got a vegetal flavour from the hops, tasted like what I imagine to be dry hopping with not enough hops for too long (if that makes sense).

on first crack, very impressed.
poured into glass, tasted.
Hmm not bad but lacks 'body' for want of a better word.
Overall, pretty good.
