HBS in Darwin

Postby Shaun » Wednesday Jul 13, 2005 7:41 pm

I am looking at moving back to Darwin and wanted to know what the home brew suppliers up there are like. Looking in the yellow pages there is none in Darwin and one (Oz Brew) in Parmerston (is this part of the Brewcraft franchise). Is there any more HBS or is this it and is it any good?

I was in Darwin about four weeks ago. Was there for a week and looked hard to find a HBS. None found :(

Try getting friendly with a HBS in Melbourne and organise a freight deal before you leave.

When I moved from Sydney to Perth about 4.5 years ago home brew was an item the carrier refused to pack.

The mates and I consumed the stock pile and the movers moved the empties

Not to mention the fact that full homebrew bottles are an F'n B to move. I moved a few hundred (most empty, but many full) between various houses in Geelong, then from Geelong to Melbourne, and to two places in Melbourne. There's no fun in it. Moving the empty ones is bad enough, let alone full crown seal longnecks that weigh in at 1.3kg each (750g or so for the beer plus 550g-600g for the actual bottle).

I am never moving again.

And the new neighbors watch you rattle and clank 15 crates of bottles up and down the stairs.

For those that are interested there is two HBS in Darwin one in Coconut Grove the other in Palmerston. They are operated by the same owner and the Palmerston store is the bigger of the two.

Their web site is http://www.ozbrew.com/.

I will reserve judgement on them at this stage until I have had more dealings with them and tried their T.U.B.S (Tailored Ultimate Brewing Systems).

i suppose freight costs are a factor up your way, but $10.00 for a kg of grain is a bit steep.

cheers

Shaun,

I live in Katherine and I get most of my home brew supplies from the bootleg barn in Palmerston. Service is good and they usually have everything I need. I've made five of their TUBS and am still undecided as to whether I like them or not (based on the last two I made didn't taste very nice). The fact that they are the only HBS in Darwin and being the NT, prices are reasonable for most items.

Regards,

MJ

Have yet to check out mail order as I want to give the local a go first. However if he is not up to standard on price and advise Big-W, K-mart and mail order it will be.

I'm not repeating myself, they are two different companies, the first being in Darwin and the second in Townsville.

Though I would update this.

The store in Coconut Grove Homemaker Village is under new management.

Improvements I have noticed are better service and they are more approachable, they realise they do not know all there is to know, and I have not heard them telling anyone outright crap like the last owner :).

Still the same:
Prices, range, and knowledge :(
