I've tried brewcraft in oakleigh and they seem to be OK.

G&G are good if you can get to yarraville (although their mail order is pretty quick)

Narre Brew Supplies are OK if you want supplies but beware of advice given...

These are the ones I've used (in no particular order).

Best I've been to is Grain and Grape in Yarraville.
- Very strong for all grain
- Excellent range of equipment
- Excellent range of extracts
- Excellent range of yeasts
- Do brew demos some Sundays (see website): all extract and all grain

Australian Winemakers (AKA Cellar Plus) in North Melbourne
- OK for brewers who are beginner-intermediate
- Almost no all-grain knowlege
- Some specialty grains avail, but no base malts
- Moderate range of hops, supply is patchy
- Interesting Italian hardware fills most of the shop: wine and pasta related
- Sara is nice, but the other lady is a bore
- Have very cheap fermenter kits

Greensborough homebrew
- Run by a character
- Cheap kegging gear

craftbrewer.com.au
- Very fast delivery
- Extensive range of yeasts and hops
- Hardware generally cheaper than elsewhere (watch out for delivery charges tho)
- Ross is extremely helpful (and lurks on this forum ;))
- Good range of grain, vacuum packed for freshness

Grain and Grape have got my vote. Really helpful for anything from K&K to all-grain (ESPECIALLY all grain :D :D :D ). Run by brewers, not salespeople (ok, most of them are run by brewers)
I left my fermenter in my other pants

Yeah I have to put my vote in for Dave over at Greensborough...

He's not really local for me (Brewcraft in Heidelberg and Oakleigh Sth are both closer), but I prefer to drive the extra 5 mins to visit him.

He knows his stuff. His shop is no frills. And he's a small, locally-owned/managed business!

Brilliant!

And he's very helpful and full of tips and knowledge.

When you say kegging gear is cheap, how much cheaper? Am thinking of drifting that way, as my partner is getting sick of cleaning bottles....

Dunno actually, he just said he sometimes get secondhand gear in which is cheaper. Just ask him to word you up on it if he gets some in.
