Yard about the warmest I could get without a new thermostat was around 8 deg, alright for lagers but not much good for ales.
I ended up with a Fan Control Model THF 0-40oC 10 Amp (brew/fridge use also) made by http://www.adloheat.com.au/climate.htm from local HBS thanks to a gift certificate (retail was $115).
I was going to make my own out of a Tobins thermostat http://www.tobins.com.au/HTML/ItemHTML/TS-120S.htm I may still in the future as the Tobins has a wider range and can be made to heat or cool at the flick of a switch. It would be good to have for a heating bulb or controlling the compressor in a fridge. It would also be good to use in a bucket with a kettle element in it to control the temp of sparge water (home made urn).

much drama involved with the installation?

ie: ( idiot proof )

cheers

Very easy and idiot proof. You run the sensor into the fridge through one side of the door. Then plug the fridge into it and it into the wall and that is it. Quick and easy. It looks the same as the THI 0-40° shown on the web site.yardglass wrote:thanks for that Shaun,Shaun wrote:

I did exactly this, for the reasons you stated: wanted to be able to control mashing/steeping, or fridge temps, with the one device (admittedly, not at the same time). Got it mail order (I recall it was around $39, plus about $8 p&h).
Also used an old extension cord, a pair of cutters etc.
Basic operation now is to plug the heating or cooling device into the power via the old extension cord with the Tobins device installed in the circuit. The way I have done it, Ineed to change the connection in the Tobins device (simply unplug/plug) to vary from heating to cooling (or vice versa). I could have used two old extension cords, and simply marked which one to use for each application, except I could only find one at the time.
I would prefer to to provide pictures for two reasons. One is that it is not easy for me to do so on this foru because of the posting rules. The other is the somewhat agricultural appearance (and possibly safety issues - I recall our Alice Springs colleague is/was an electrician) of the overall construction - I installed all connections inside an unwanted floppy disc box! I would hate for some electrical inspector to appear at my door, and confiscate all my brewing equipment, plus all 350 litres of stockpiled nectar over this issue!
