Ginger Beer

greetings all, have been looking at this site for a few weeks now and very informative
I have just got back into home brew after a 5 year break and have put down a couple of basic brews (will look to get more adventurous as time goes by)

but my question is - I want to do an alcoholic ginger beer for some friends (I am personally not a fan) and want to know wether to use raw sugar as it states on the can or should I use dextrose or some other brew enhancer

I made one about a year ago and asked Coopers whether I should use raw sugar as advised or something else. They said go with the raw sugar, which I did and it tasted awesome (IMHO).

Most ginger beer kits are artifically sweetened (I think grumpys might sell one with natural sugar) so there will probably be that 'artifical' taste in there regardless.

Dextrose will do the job, but ginger beer does taste good with some malt.

If you want to avoid artificial sweetner you'll have to make up your own ginger syrup, and you can use stevia to sweeten.

I've done the Cooper's Ginger Beer with just plain, white sugar. It tasted very nice indeed. In fact, it's probably the best value for money brewing I've ever done... a $10 tin plus a dollar's worth of sugar. I did reduce the amount of top-up water though... which, I think has given the ginger a stronger "bite". Personally, I quite like that :)

I used 2kg of white sugar with a coopers kit I have in the fermenter at the moment.

Yet to try it, but it smells great :D

well, I put this ginger beer down with raw sugar and I bottled yesterday and I must admit it smelt magnificent coming out of the fermenter
I now cant wait to taste it, if the smell is anything to go by it should be great :D

try the crystalised ginger in each bottle for that extra bite.

also, a piece of advice that i read somewhere was to rock the fermenter before bottling so as to get some sediment in the bottle, this i did, but wouldn't again.

maybe i rock n rolled too much, ended up with a lot. :shock:

cracked open a bottle of this tonite and very happy with it
been in the bottle for just over three weeks
very Ginger aroma (as it should be :shock: )
also sweet and does have an alcoholic kick

so thanks guys for the feedback and I would definitely do this one again
so simple and very tasty

bugger all sediment when I poured into a glass
I bottled into PET and the sediment seemed to gather in the
bottom of the bottles and stay there
