Hi guys, first of all, congratulations on a bloody good forum - it really helps the newbies such as myself.
Ive only done few brews to date and am going to give the LCPA a crack. My question is after I boil the cluster pellets and cascade pellets for 15 minutes, do i then strain the liquid into the fermenter or just throw it all in?

AND could I use Black Rock or Coopers light malt extract instead of the Morgans?
All the other ingredients I've got - and can't wait give it a try

You can strain the hops out if you want. I just throw them in and they mostly settle to the bottom of the fermenter anyway.
The LCPA kit that I made came with a Black Rock Pilsner Blonde as the base kit. It was a Brewmaster kit. It turned out quite well. It came with Cascade and Willemette hops.

Don't bother straining.
Also, boil the hops with the Morgans/Coopers malt and throw it all in. Coopers malt should be OK.

I used the coopers malt instead of the morgans. In fact, any kit bittered to about 20IBU could be subbed. And i didnt filter, racked after 1 week and its lovely and clear. Found another longie when reorganising the shed, so i still have 1 longie of the magical drop left!
Boonie - german pub i think you are thinking of

is the german arms in hahndorf. Not a fan of it personally, think you would be better off visiting grumpys just down the road from it. Another very nice micro that does some of the best pizzas in SA (IMHO) and some awesome beers.

Well, last night saw the final LCPA clone drunk. Needed a fitting occasion and what better than watching the 1997 grand final. The 10 year reunion happened last week so was time to dust off the dvd and see jarman and co giving the saints a footy lesson.
Whilst drinking the LCPA i started thinking about how i would do it if i was to make another. I did swear off kit brewing after i purchased my esky and kettle to start brewing AG. But, i havent got around to fitting them with manifolds, taps etc. And i will be buying a few kegs of Ross in the next week or 2 so thought i could crank out another batch or 2 of these ready for when the kegs get here.
It was suggested by someone on here to swap the chinook and cascade so will give that a go, all in the name of experimenting but will also add 50g choc malt to give it a slightly darker colour. The real LCPA has a higher IBU to my taste so thought maybe i could use a tin of coopers bitter instead of the morgans draught (35 v 20 IBU). Maybe even add some light crystal (up to 250g).
Any comments?
Trough Lolly - kinda trying to maybe make something between a SNPA and a LCPA and seeing as your recipe for SNPA is tres popular thought you might have some thoughts on this?

Very clear cos its been 'cold conditioning' in the shed for a while now and the temp in there is about 4-5degC!

Ok, I've stopped salivating at the pics you posted, so I can now type!!
When I did my first LCPA clone, I did a partial mash. I clearly recall that I used a light green Coopers Pale Ale kit and it was a good base to launch the LCPA recipe from, IMHO. I think I used a 50/50 split of Chinook and Northern Brewer to bitter the batch with and had flavour and aroma hop additions of Cascade.
I'll happily stand corrected, but to me LCPA is substantially lighter in colour compared to SNPA, so the Coopers Pale Ale kit was a good starter. I also used pale, not light, crystal malt along with some excellent aussie ale malt from IMC...not sure if it's still available nowadays to the homebrewer. Yeast was 1056 - Chico Ale...fermented at 18C for 10 days and conditioned for two weeks in secondary before kegging.

I got a LCPA clone kit courtesy of MHB in newcastle. It's in the fermenter at the moment, and initial samples taste very promising.

Mark is the original fellow who gave me the LCPA recipe ages ago. He used to be in partnership with the Mayfield guy, until he moved up the road and went alone.
He's pretty cluey

Cracked my first LCPA clone tonight. Has only been bottled for just over 2 weeks, but it made a satisfying phizzz as I opened the bottle. Still tastes a bit immature, but I love the bitterness level and the aroma. Will have to give it more time, but I think this will be a cracker and one of my better results.
Thanks Boonie for passing the recipe on.
As of 6.8.07, this is now drinking beautifully. Love the citrus hop character and aroma. Will have to try one alongside the original, but the supply of beers with some character in Port Macquarie is not good, apart from a new micro brewery The Little Brewing Company. The local Council has just given approval for building of a Dan Murphy's so there is hope in time. In the meantime, will continue to enjoy my own.

i really enjoyed making and drinking this beer. Thanks Boonie for posting the recipe. I do tend to agree with Drsmurto with swapping the hops around (chinook and cascade) and also reckon the addition of a little crystal grain would be great as the original seems to be a little sweeter than the recipe. As for colour, mine seems spot on, so i dont think there is any need to add any chocolate grain.
Definately my most popular beer to date, and i'll be making more of this in the future.

Have swapped the hops around in the latest version, also added 250g of JW caramalt - recipe is

This will be the first brew i ever keg. Been dry hopping for over 2 weeks now so just need to hurry up and rack it into the keg. Ended up using 20g of cascade to dry hop with. Will report back with results!

I'll give swapping the hops a crack with my next LCPA. ie original post with slight adjustment in hops dept. See docs recipe.
And then I am also going to try a CPA can swapped with the Morgans, but with the original hop schedule I had, just to compare.
I did this the other day but stuffed up the yeast

and put a CPA standard yeast in instead of the yeast I had from the trub of the previous
LCPA I made......bugger

.I realised this about 12 hours after the fact when I opened the fridge and spotted the trub in the fridge.

I went halves in a pile of hops a while back, mainly to get a mate into the LCPA recipe. When he put his down i was supposed to bring around a spare US56 yeast i had lying around but forgot so he is using the coopers kit yeast too. I reckon as long as you keep the temps 18, 20 max you should be ok.
My next brew is to combine my 2 fave APA hops, amarillo and cascade into this recipe. ie. both at 15, 5 and dry hop.

Cracked mine open last night at the Hills brewers guild pizza night.
Twas a bit young (1 week in the bottle), but I guess I'm a bit impatient.
Turned out quite nice indeed. Pretty beefy at 6.5%, but it's a nice fruity ale indeed.

Have this on tap now.
Reminder of the recipe variation i used.
1 can Grumpys 25IBU
1.7 kg Grumpys Pale Malt Extract
250g JW caramalt (50 EBC) steeped
15 g Cluster pellets @ 15 mins
15 g Chinook pellets @ 15 mins
5 g Cascade pellets @ 15 mins
US56 yeast
20 g cascade pellets@ rack - dry hopped
I left it in secondary for nearly 3 weeks before racking to keg. Its another top drop, slightly more IBUs than the original and after drinking a few LCPA stubbies last night probably not far off IBU wise. Am tempted to dry hop another 20g in the keg just to get it as in your face as the real stuff.
Cant wait to have a few mates around for a keg warming party
EDIT - planted my cluster rhizome last week and have a cascade and chinook on order. Think this may be done a few more times.......

hey, anyone know of how to best convert this to AG, i was thinking something as simple as 4kg pale malt and 1 kg light crystal, then use the hopping as above, what IBU should i aim for?

This recipe is somewhere in the forum, but I've forgotten where. It's in my recipe file.

Hosted a BBQ for the father in law's 85th birthday today. Had 7 different HBs in the fridge, but Boonie's LCPA clone got the vote for the best beer of the day.
You just gotta love the nice balanced malt and bitterness, and that Cascade citrussy hop flavour and aroma.
I'll be making more of the LCPA clone in the future, but as I have a 40 litre stockpot on order I'm about to move into AG brewing. Hope it will turn out as good as this one, although Trough Lolly's SNPA is first cab off the rank.
So many beers to brew, so little time. Guess that's the lament of many of us.
