I was recently given a bottle each of the above beers to try.

My thoughts:

Moteiths Black -This beer is one of the best dark beers I have ever tried. Give me lots more. I loved it. Smooth and malty. Like a Porter or Stout without the bitterness/bite.

Little Creatures Pale Ale - Very Ordinary. I dont see what all the fuss is about. (My worst k&K home brew is better than this beer).

Matilda Bay Roof Top Red - This would have to be the worst beer I have ever tasted. (yes worse than VB, Carlton cold and Tooheys Red). My wife agreed and after one sip each we poured it down the sink.

I'm interested to hear what others think about these beers. Particularly the Monteiths Black from NZ. I have not seen it before.

Be prepared for some differences of opinion about the LCPA.... first time I've seen a bad word about it on here. I'm a big fan myself.

Haven't tried the other two, though. But will look out for the Monteiths on the next bottlo run.

Monteiths Black Beer - Nice drop. A very easy drinking dark, good to see they are being sold virtually everywhere now as well. I like.

LCPA - I don't mind it but I much prefer CPA. Most people on this forum love it, I think it's good but prefer english style ales in the most part.

Rooftop Red - I disagree. While it's not going to win any awards, it's certainly alot better than alot of the mass-produced commercials. If anything it is a poor version of Kilkenny Draught minus the creaminess.

Moteiths Black - Agreed. The 3 Ravens brewery (local to me) makes a black very close to this. I'm a big dark beer fan.

Little Creatures Pale Ale - It is possible that you had a dud bottle?
I found it a bit too hoppy on my first taste. Lately I've really liked it. It's the one commercial beer with heaps of hop flavour.

Matilda Bay Roof Top Red - Hmmm, I don't mind this, it has some interesting malt flavours. I could understand if anyone didn't like it.

Not every beer is for everybody. The world would be sh!t boring place if we all liked the same thing.

Just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's sh!t. I can live with that.

For the record I do plan to try the LCPA and the roof top red again, just to check if I got a couple of dud bottles or whether they just dont suit my taste buds. (These two bottles did come to sydney from WA with my brother in law - maybe they got cooked in transit??).

Also I have recently brewed and bottled a TCB American Ale Wetpak, which is reportedly similar to the LCPA. I might do a side by side comparison when the wetpak is ready for drinking in a few more weeks.

I'm not a massive fan of the LCPA either, I'll always take a Coopers first given the choice.

Monteiths Black - Haven't had this beer for a long time because I haven't seen it. But it is one of the best dark beers I've had.

LCPA - A nice refreshing pale ale, nothing in comparison to a Coopers.

MB Rooftop - Nothing special, wouldn't buy it again, but if it was offered for free would accept.

Get yourself a Hahn Vienna Red & give it a side by side tasting then.

tarlox - I quite like the Rooftop Red, but a good example is an elusive animal.

I've had it on tap at The Queens hotel in Mount Lawley (Perth) and it was crap.
I've had bottles of it that were delightful .... and I've had bottles of it that had some crazy bitterness.
There's some quality control aspect about this particular brew that MB hasn't quite got sussed yet.

I'm game to keep trying.

Monteiths was neither here nor there when i had it last, take a coopers dark over it any day. The other one, the red i think (?), was pretty good though. Wouldnt mind going to New Zealand to see if they have any of it on tap.

LCPA = heaven rooftop red=crap

monteiths black is a good drop. i like every monteith i have had thus far, but black is still their best brew i've had.

i always find the second LCPA is better than the first on one night. but i'd take the LCBA over it any day.

rooftop red, could take it or leave it.

Agreed on the LCPA, the first one is a little overpowering. From then on very good drinking.

I actually prefer the LC Pilsener.

i'm shocked to hear someone with that opinion on LCPA, i agree with another comment made, you may have got a dud bottle.

maybe you should venture over to WA and visit the brewery and have one straight out of the tap. i'm sure it will taste different. plus its a good little restaurant/bar, its inside the brewery.

MB - smooth dark drinking i must say. Might just be my graphic designer head, but the packaging made me think i was gonna taste something a little licorishy. Still good though

LCPA - yeah found it way too hopyy myself on first try, (and i like hoppy beer) but got another 6er last week as it was on spesh, and didn't mind it at all. mind you drank it on same night as coopers golden, the golden weighed in i reckon.

rooftop - no idea, haven't seen it up here in northern nsw. prob for best by the sound of it.

Sorry craig82, but here is another uncomplimentary report on LCPA.

Have had a stubbie on two separate occasions, and both were unpalatable. And that is probably the kindest way of putting it!

In view of the number of very favourable reviews of this beer I am going to try it yet again in the near future. Hope the first two were balls and not strikes.

Have not tried Monteiths, but Rooftop Red Lager wasn't bad. Certainly nowhere near as "bad" as the LCPA's I have tried.

I think I'll have to give LCPA another tasting as alot of people are saying they adapted to it. I found it to be just a bit bitter, although I enjoyed the aroma.

I think Rooftop is copping it a bit, it's an average beer but certainly not a poor one.

actually, i've had another LCPA since and changed my mind again (it's my prerogative, after all).......there are heaps better out there i'd rather drink than LCPA
