Bit of an attempt at a Monteith's Smooth black style.
Coopers Stout can
1kg dark LM
150 choc grain
150 dark grain
15 g sticklebrac + 10g steep
1/2 hr steep for grain
1/2 hr simmer with DLM and 15g hop. Final simmer for 10 min with grain water, then added coopers can, turned off and cooled in the sink - added hop for this 10-15min period.
Filled to 22ltrs.

two headed brewer put this up last May. Thinking of giving it a go next brew, but not sure my HBS will have sticklebrac. In fact, even google had not heard of sticklebrac (though this may not be a good indicator of things).

Can anyone give me a heads up on this hops? Substitute?

They stock this hop as do most HB shops. Check your spelling of the Hop.

p.s. to me that recipe does not appear close to Monteith's Black, which I think only has an IBU of 16? The coopers stout plus the extra high alpha hops you are proposing may give you a much higher IBU???

From the Monteiths web site: "Monteith's Black Beer has an Original Gravity (OG) of 1051, alcohol of 5.2% and a final gravity of 1012+. This combination provides a rich smooth body that continues to develop as the beer is enjoyed.

Monteith's Black Beer has a medium perceived bitterness of 16 from the use of a single premium hop variety. This method of hopping adds to the dry-roasted notes of darker malts and is balanced with the sweeter nutty tastes of the tawny malts."

I have to admit to being pretty new to this still...could you suggest better hops? i have some fuggles and some cascade in the cupboard, maybe either of those would do?

I think you should try and stick to the NZ style hops however fuggles might be a good substitute. You could also download Qbrew for free and have a go at formulating your own recipe based on the info supplied by Monteiths.

thanks for the advice, will see what i can come up with. on the way out the door so may have to wait for later to try qbrew but it sounds interesting.
