This is the old fashioned method of making ginger beer. The sugars are not fully fermented so gives it a sweet taste. It's no good because you cant' store the bottles as they will lose sweetness and bottles will explode.
Thanks for all the info. As for storing though, I don't think I'd have too ...

Weird Ginger Beer Recipe - Tastes Delicious

All, I need some help!
A mate of mine gave me a Ginger Beer that his Grandfather made and it was a delicious, highly carbonated drink. Eventually after a lot of prompting, I got the recipe from his Grandfather.
Problem is, I'm having trouble trying to understand the recipe. It's not like anything ...

If you don't get your honey from the supermarket, then where do you get it from? Is yellow box a type of eucalyptus tree?
Deli, Fruit & Veg shops, Health Food shops, etc.
I made a brew from virtually the same ingredients as Cat except used Yellow Box as I couldn't find Clover honey and it tastes ...

To be honest, I don't reckon the screw top cap will hold with the pressure that builds up inside the bottle. You maybe able to get away with it for a low carbonated beer, but suspect you may have problems.

If you do decide to go for it though, make sure you use the coloured glass bottles and not ...

So I guess you have to apply a fair amount of pressure to get a good seal? Also, I assume it's normal for the cap to remain slightly loose until pressure builds up?

The cap shouldn't be loose at all.  I can't speak for screw tops but for crown seals you just need to pull the handle ...

As long as you're careful and sterilise, then seriously theres not that great of chance of infection.
My opinion would be to pick a brew that you can replicate easily and do one without racking, and then one with racking. Do a taste test or compare the clarity of the two brews sitting side by side ...

Try eucalyptus oil - it's gets the glue off without too much drama. Won't help you too much if you've still got the paper label stuck on though...

Make sure you keep at least one bottle from the original brew to compare it against. That way you will get to know the different flavours/aromas associated with the different hops you are trying.

If your going to bottle into different size bottles I would recommend you look into bulk priming. Do a search there's heaps of info in the forum on different ways to do it.
I generally only bottle into long necks (750ml) these days, but always use bulk priming as it's so easy and simple. Check out ...

Thanks - helps me.
Couple of questions though...
When the recipe says "225 g 60L Crystal Malt" does that mean 225grams per 60 litres?
Also, what is Irish Moss? I've only ever come across Irish Moss in laxatives or in the garden! :? :?

Not to many pubs would bother but i can tell you that i bought a glass from my HB shop which is called a headmaster and it has a sandblasted bottom, personally i think it works a treat as my beers dont last long enough in the glass to go flat, though even when i have been a bit slack i still havent ...

At the end of the day, it's your brew. If that's what your tastebuds are telling you would be a good thing.... then go for it.

Good to hear guys. I'm really impressed with the quality of the unit. I've seen the other types of units in my local HBS for like $120 and always put it off by the price.
