Re: Happy Accident

Haven't tried using hop flowers yet (hoping it is third year lucky with my hop bind).

How would you describe the flavour difference between the pellets and the flowers? Is it mostly extra aroma?

Happy Accident

Hi Guys,

Thought I'd tell you about my first BIAB. It was based off of SuperBroo's recipe here: http://homebrewandbeer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10412

Bought myself all new equipment (been doing kit and kilo up till recently), including a fancy laser thermometer. Unfortunately it turns out ...

Re: Where can u buy hops plants in Melbourne?

I would also like to know where to get a hop plant in Melbourne.

As for how to use them, I recommend going back through the Basic Brewing archives ( http://www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=radio ). They have had several episodes on how to grow hops, and how to use them in your brewing.

You can ...

Re: Fermenting peaches

Hi All,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but as we just opened a bottle of the peach wine for Christmas I thought I should let you know how it went.

I followed a recipe off the ABC site ( http://www.abc.net.au/tasmania/stories/s1559025.htm ), substituting the apricots for peaches, and doubling ...

Re: Fermenting peaches

Firstly, SANITISATION, not sterilisation!

The chemical added was quite possibly metabisulphate. I wouldn't do it though.

As far as the recipe goes, I'd consider an amount of citric acid.

And finally, DON'T BOIL THE PEACHES UNLESS YOU WANT JAM!!! Heat them to around 70-75*C and hold for 20-30mins ...

Re: Fermenting peaches

Thanks guys, that helps me a lot. All of the recipes look fairly similar, they just seem to vary in amount and procedure. I might use the recipe on the ABC site ( http://www.abc.net.au/tasmania/stories/s1559025.htm ), mainly cause the ingredients are in metric and I won't have to convert them :D ...

Fermenting peaches

Hi Guys,

My parents have a peach tree in the backyard, and right the moment it is teeming with peaches. Even with preserving and pies we always have peaches coming out of our ears, so I figured why not stick a few in the fermenter and see what happens :D

Unfortunately I have never done anything ...

Thanks for all the replies. I've bottled half a dozen with a mixture of 1 drop, one and a half drops and a teaspoon of sugar so I'll see how they compare.

Hey Bigears, how did the bottles compare? I'm wrestling with the same problem now. I have a couple of 470ml Grolsch swing-tops, and a couple ...

If it was a sachet, then it was probably a flavouring to add to watered down vodka. There are all sorts of flavours.

Hmm, could have been. Didn't read the pack properly, although I thought it mentioned yeast.

Anyway, my fermenter will be busy for the next few weeks. Just waiting for the cider to ...

Sake

I was browsing through the Homebrew shop on the weekend, deciding what to buy for my next brew, when I noticed a Sake brewing kit. When I say kit, it looked like a sachet, but apparently has everything you need to make Sake.

Just curious if anyone here had tried making Sake? If so, how did it turn ...

Be careful. The fermentability levels of malts can be inconsistent. IMO using a 100% fermentable sugar, like dextrose, is more accurate.
I personally noticed no difference between using malt or sugar.

FWIW I feel that carbonation drops tend to over carbonate beer to my liking. But if you like the ...

Thanks for the quick responses, much appreciated.

Carb drops aren't all the same size, so you will get inconsistant levels of carbonation with them. Dextrose or (preferably) malt will give you a better result.

Never considered using malt to prime the bottles. Definitely one I'll need to try ...

Newbie brewing questions

Hi Guys (and girls),

I'm new on the home brew scene. Got my first home brew kit for Christmas, and finished bottling my third batch a couple of weeks ago. Been doing straight can brews up till now, although planning on being a little more creative with the next batch.

Anyway, I had a couple of ...
