Coopers Carb Drops in 500ml bottles

Post by bigears »

One drop for 375 ml, two for 750 ml, what about 500 ml bottles?

I'm curious to find out what level of carbonation is normal for the recommended dosage. I'm not sure what level Coopers are aiming for on average. I use pretty strong 500ml bottles that have had bottle conditioned beer in them. I'm reasonably confident I won't get bottle bombs by putting 2 in 500ml but I don't want gushers either. If I was bottling an English Ale then I'd probably just use 1 drop but I'm specifically thinking of an APA here. If kegging I would carb to 2.5 volumes give or take.

I use the grolsch 470ml bottles and have used 1 & a 1/2 carb drops with a draught beer. No problems with carbonation, although I now bulk prime my brews!

Bulk priming is the way to go no matter what size bottle you use. You have alot more control and the Coopers drops are VERY iffy to begin with!
Prost and happy brewing!

Cheers guys,

I keg my beers but I typically have enough left over for half a dozen bottles. While I'll bulk prime if I'm bottling a full batch it's not worth it for a few bottles. The carb drops seemed liked a good solution. If they're iffy I may just revert to a teaspoon of sugar or glucose.

This would be best IMHO.

when i frist started, i used 1 carbonation drop in my 500ml bottles, and they turned out better than 1 drop in the 375ml bottles....

But i agree with bulk priming.... doesnt matter what sized bottles you use... consistent

Hi

I use the grolsch bottles too and have been putting two carb drops in them for ages now and have never had any problems.

Thanks for all the replies. I've bottled half a dozen with a mixture of 1 drop, one and a half drops and a teaspoon of sugar so I'll see how they compare.

Hey Bigears, how did the bottles compare? I'm wrestling with the same problem now. I have a couple of 470ml Grolsch swing-tops, and a couple of 500ml bottles. I'm looking forward to using them, but I'm not sure how many carb drops to use, or whether I should just use sugar to prime these ones.

I'd love to bulk prime, but at the moment I barely have room for 1 fermenter, a second is out of the question. The problems with still living with ones parents :D

use 1 carb drop in a 500ml bottle.... you might just need to leave it for an extra week to ensure the bottle is fully carbed... As i said, i have used 1 carb drop in 1 500ml bottle, and they have worked fine....

G'day guys,

Speaking of carbo drops, I returned from a week away to find a coupla dozen ants had found their way into what I thought was a secure tupperware container full of carbo drops.

I managed to get rid of the ants and transferred the drops to a new (hopefully impregnable) container while I figure out what to do. Should I just throw them out or are they unlikely to cause an infection in the wheat beer I need to bottle tomorrow??

Cheers,

Throsby.

Thanks mate. Thought they may be beyond saving.

Cracked a new bag of drops to bottle my wheat beer, will toss out the infected ones.

Cheers,

Throsby.
