Re: It's Schwarzbier time!!

Bombs-a-way !

One scharzbier done. Got crackin' as soon as arrived home from work so that I could have the weekend free. Was unable to get my hands on tettnanger in time so ended up using Hallertauer for the 5 min hop addition. 79% eff for 1050 OG (22L) pitched on a 2206 yeast cake. One thing that ...

Re: It's Schwarzbier time!!

Thanks TL,

I asked the question following a warning against pitching onto too much yeast and running the risk of producing a characterless beer. My instinct is that an entire 1st generation yeast should be OK. But it's always nice to ask........

Cheers

Re: It's Schwarzbier time!!

TL,

When you pitched this wort onto the primary, did you use the entire yeast cake?

Re: Pils grain for an ale

Perhaps my best ever brew was to take Doc's JSGA clone recipe, replace the Amarillo with Horizon for bittering and Nelson Sauvin for favouring and aroma..........and to ditch the crystal/caramunich altogether. Disappeared way too fast........

I must admit I'm giong thru a stage where I'd rather err ...

Re: It's Schwarzbier time!!

Oh, this is just torturous

How's any lover of dark beer supposed to read TL's glowing post and think they've got any chance of not yielding to squeezing in just one more brew into an already impossible schedule

But if Bro Stout suggests this beer is good enough to give up brewing ...

Re: First Lagers

Having downed a dozen different lagers, among others, over the wk end in the name of research, I can confirm that:

Bo Pils is not my beer. I found German Pils more to my liking though I'm not motivated enough to brew one. Sam Adams Boston Lager I liked. Ditto an Okoberfest I tried (Hoffbrau). Less ...

Re: Fig Beer

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Doc, you've really sparked my imagination. I'm a big fan of figs - jam or raw, skin and all, 'whites' or 'blacks' as they're referred to in dad's old country. Brings back childhood memories of my all-time favourite jam - fig with walnuts.

My instinct would have been to go with an ...

Re: First Lagers

Stubbie, let's say I've given you 5 minutes to grab any lager you want in the bottleshop and I'll pay for them...what would you grab?

Spot on response, TL. That's what I should have asked myself in the first place. But to be truthful, and I'll admit that I haven't tasted a great number of lagers ...

First Lagers

Ok, so now I'm happy with my AG set up - not perfect, but functional - and really pleased with my ales. That's all I've ever brewed - ales. But now, as the weather cools, the plan is to move my fermenting ales out of the garage brew fridge and into the house where the ambient temp is fine for ales ...

Re: Hefeweizen

For anyone interested in what I got for WB-06 @ 17C fermentation temp:

Very tart indeed out of the fermenter. First taste of a carbonated beer: heaps of clove, only some bubblegum, nil banana and the tartness has subsided heaps. Very crisp, dryish and dare I say it, almost lager-ish. Not quite true ...

TL,

Thanks for your ever sensible advice. I feel a lot happier now and can, with a clear conscience, choose between splitting or harvesting as the situation requires. :D

Re: Hefeweizen

True, but for whatever reason, I found that 3068 tends to mutate sooner than other strains, so getting 3 batches from the smack pack, without yeast washing or plating out, is par for course...

TL,

I assume that you refer to pitching a smack pack, and then harvesting yeast for the subsequent 2 ...

Re: Hefeweizen

Hey,

Having been recently impressed by a few commercial hefe's I sampled, I decided to brew one of these last night. Went 50/50 Weyermann Pils and Wheat, mashed @ 67C, 90 min boil, Hallertau @ 60 and 10 to 13 IBU and WB-06.

But my big worry is fermentation temp. :? I read a few posts on AHB over ...

Noooooooooooo. Stainless steel = God's own Material. :D

But you're right. It can be a bastard to work with without proper tools.

Re: Fittings

Running a nut over the thread once cut will rough the threads back into shape if you've distorted them.

Maybe, I repeat, maybe, that you'll get away with that approach if the all-thread is brass and the nut-come-threading die is made from a harder material, say hardened steel, AND the ...

Grain Bulk Order

S'pose it can't hurt to ask..........?

With rising interest rates, I'm looking at stretching my HB $ as far as it will go. So I'm looking at buying a few 25kg sacks of grain. Living in a Melb NW suburb, I like the idea of buying grain from CraftBrewer, directly thru their warehouse in Derrimut. But ...

Just before you go adding more hops, I'd be thinking long term, and getting financial approval for your micro-brewery, now.
