Distilling Water

Given Dogger Dan's hatred of chlorinated water, the thought came to me as to the wisdom of distilling water. I have read a couple of articles on the matter and some claim that even the best charcoal water filters don't get all the nitty gritty out of the water. Has anyone tried brewing with ...

I empathise with Dogger's sentiment about the chlorine issue and would go one further to include flouride as another unnecessary poison placed in the water by well meaning but somewhat misguided health officials.

However, to my mind, HYGEINE is more important than the taste of the water; if you get ...

Trueman,

I have lived in Darwin and North Qld and what I used to do was put the fermenter in the bathroom as it was normally the coolest place in the house. If you place it in the bath, there is no problem with splashing some water over it or what I used to do was to sit ice blocks on top. If you ...

Re: Canberra water quality

Good? Bad? Can make beer out of politicians pissing in your pocket?

I agree with the two replies. I have had better quality brewing since arriving in Canberra and essentially I have not changed anything else. If in doubt, you can filter pollies piss using muslin or callico. Otherwise boil your ...

Re: Cup measures

Geez i know its hard to understand written text as far as emotions go on the internet, but K9.....you couldve asked Dogger a bit more politely than that.

Ok, Paleman, I take your point and Dogger Dan, there is no offence intended, I suppose my own quirky sense of humour has cut in. But ...

Rather than using all sorts of chemicals for disinfecting, I rinse my stubbies in very hot water (hint: use rubber gloves) and then after draining them, I microwave them just prior to bottling. I have a fairly large microwave and can fit 12 stubbies in at a time. I find that about 4-5 min each cycle ...

Suggestions for Recipes - Black Rock Cider

I have had different suggestions as to how to brew this particular wort including: replacing the 20lt of water with apple juice; putting 5 or so peeled apples in a stocking bag within the fermenter to introduce the apple flavouring .
Has anyone come up with a dry cider recipe that works? :)

Cup measures

I am having a hard time trying to quantify how many grams a cup is. I know that diferent substances have different densities and therefore a cup of malt may be a different weight to a cup of dextrose (and even more so if you differentiate between liquid and powdered malt).

The reason I ask is that ...

Priming Stubbies

Over the years, I have primed my stubbies (individually) with white table sugar. Recently, I have also used castor sugar, Is this the right stuff to use and how much does it alter the taste of the end product ? If I'm using the wrong stuff, what should I be using and why?

Stew,

I've tried a range of storage methods over the years and have resorted to using the book cartons from removalists. All I do is tape up both ends and then cut it in half so that the taped ends become the bottom. These will store 24 stubbies (green thingies with extinct dog on them).

If I ...
