Fizzy brew
Re: Fizzy brew
Gusher infections don't taste like full on primary infections. The taste is not entirely un-beery. Buy lots of bottle conditioned beers from Dan's and 1st Choice and you will come to recognise it very quickly. I can smell one before the lid is off now - which is handy because I can start swearing before the beer hits the sink. Saves a lot of time.

Satisfied now that it's not an infection, took a FG reading and found that it's dropped a couple of points since bottling. Drinking them extra cold or pouring into a jug helps heaps, and has allowed me to salvage the batch.
That was the good news, now for the bad. Dec 30th came home late at night to find glass spread all over the garage. I initially blamed the hot weather - 39deg, but then found 2 caps with the same batch number. I cleaned up, covered the remainder with a heavy towel and went to bed, two days later, more glass, again the same batch (this can't be good). I donned coat, glasses and welding gloves and opened a stubbie. Fizzed everywhere, but eventually got enough into the hydro tube for a sample. Jeez it's dropped 5pts since bottling (1011-1006). FG was stable at bottling, and hed been in primary for 4 weeks. My guess is that the WY1968 maybe needed swirling due to the lower ferment temp (18-20deg). Should have raised alarm with 1035ish OG and 1011 FG.
Did toy with the idea of "burping" the bottles and recapping, but have decided it's not worth the risk. Will remove caps carefully (with adequate PPE), dump contents, salvage bottles and wipe egg from face.
One interesting point was that it was the old heavy crown seal CUB bottles that have exploded and not the cheap CUB new stubbies.
Nothing interesting to see here, move along.

I guess that makes us even - we both claim to know things of which we have no understanding at all.
