What would you do?
What would you do?
I will (hopefully) come into posession of 2 kegs (legally of coarse)
I already have 1 X 30 ltr electric urn, + 1 X 55 ltr mashtun with a copper manifold.
My options, and costs are now numerous.
What would you do?
edit: very bad spelling

Re: What would you do?
Tricky one really. Initial response would be to say weld them both into a double keggle since your tun is big enough but the urn would be on the small size to support double batches as a HLT, IMO. If you brew single batches then you could think about turning one into a tun and the other a keggle or (probably the road I'd go down) turn one into a HLT and the other a keggle.

Re: What would you do?
yeh Wot E Said....
Definately use one as a 50l kettle, That way you can put copper coils in it as an Imersion chiller. (with mine, I can pitch 20Min after flame out)
Your 30L urn will not have the volume to have coils in with the boil (to sanitize it) & I suspect that it is very prone to boil overs any way?
I have 16m of 3/4" copper coils in my 50L kettle (keg) & it has plenty of head space left for the hot break to rise but not enough for a double batch.

.......Yes the old garden tap has been replaced with a ball valve.........
I'm considering welding in a 6 or 8 inch section from another keg to give me the volume for doubles. Trouble is, then I would need another one for a HLT, another burner, Reg, gas bottle or manifold.........stuff it, I'l stick to singles for now.
The other one could be used for a direct fired mash tun for doing stepped mashes?
Cheers, Mick.

Will save me going out to do some "shopping".

Re: What would you do?
If they are still serviceable you could always fill them with ummmm i dunno............. BEER maybe?

Re: What would you do?
Thanks for the replies guys. It turns out I could only get one
This guys brother wants to turn the other one into a compressor, how boring is that. So the decision is made for me really, it is to be a keggle.
So I will have a electric HLT, ice box mash tun, and a gas fired keggle
Do empty kegs have any pressure before I go and blow myself up cutting the top out?

Re: What would you do?
I should think you'd want to equalise the keg with atmospheric pressure before you go cutting. Never fiddled with a commercial keg before, do they have pressure-release valves like the cornelius variety?

Re: What would you do?
No they don't, just depress the ball that is in the top of the stem.bullfrog wrote: do they have pressure-release valves like the cornelius variety?
it is basically a check valve or clean break valve & will let the pressure out.

Thanks drsmurto.
2V isn't 3V no matter how much you wish it to be
Gotta love this caper, if only I could turn it into a job?? (and still make money)

I should have added, billybushcook wrote: just depress the ball that is in the top of the stem.
.
You will find that it has heaps of pressure at first & you will not be able to actually depress the ball. Try burping it with a hammer first.

Re: What would you do?
You have 3 vessels.
An urn (HLT), an esky (mashtun) and a keg (kettle). Same setup as me.
No point denying it, you are a 3V brewer now.

The ex techo in me was wondering how the hell you could brew anything with only 3 volts!!

Cheers,
TL

Re: What would you do?
Didn't think I was denying it drsmurto. Have been 2v since I started AG, until soon.. Never did give biab a go. You guys did too good a job ages ago convincing me of 3V. So in essence all this is your faultdrsmurto wrote:You have 3 vessels.

Re: What would you do?
The more people i can steer to 3V brewing and chilling the better the world will be.
Re: What would you do?
How is multiple vessel superior to BIAB (assuming you want people to convert to that specifically)? That reads a little abrupt, but I'm only curious.
Re: What would you do?
I'm sure drsmurto was more tongue in cheek than anything. BIAB was still young (last year) when I started, I chose to pursue 3V because I likes it.
. BIABers are winning comps and the like, the proof is in the pudding. BIAB was still seen as a way to get started in AG when I first went AG, as I was sure I was in for the long haul, I spent the few extra $ to go 3V.
In the end you need to do whats best for you. IMHO and all that.
Cheers
Edit: hole is cut in top of keggle now, will order weldless ball valve next week. Also ordering a solar pump

I batch sparge and have brewing mates referring to me as one of those filthy batch spargers.....

As long as you brew you are ok with me Fifey!
