storing your bottled beer

Post by bobby »

Hi all, gust a quick question. When you stor your beer in the shed and temp goes up and down with the day temp does this have an affect on your bottle beer.As summer can get quite hot. No problems as yet but this summer has been quite mild.

I would say it would bobby, best way to test would be to store a few inside the house where it is a bit more stable temperature wise and taste test side by side with one stored in the shed.
I reckon there will be some difference for sure.

Storing any alcoholic beverage is best done in a dark cool place, with the least possible temperature variation.
If that's not possible, then a place with the least temperature variation. Large fluctuations are not kind to beer, wine etc.

Fortunately, I have two large cellars at the back of my garage, underground, and on the South East corner of the house. It's dark, and the temperatures are stable. Perfect. I can pull a 10 to 15 years old red wine from the cellar, and it will have no ullage, with the corks showing no sign of seepage. Same for my beer, it's cool and dark. Just had a Stout two days ago, brewed in July 2010, and it was perfect.

If you can't achieve that at your place, try to get as close to ideal as you can. Or learn to drink your beer real quick before it deteriorates.

Mine lives in the cupboard in the shed. Temp is all over the place like a puppies lunch - very hot in summer and freezing in winter. It does affect the beer, so my aim is to just keep myself a bit ahead of consumption.

I used to use an old fridge that I pulled out the motor and layed it on its back.
Helped a lot in a hot tin shed.

I generally only brew about 8-9 months of the year. Now I have a temp controlled fermenting fridge I chuck as much of my stock in there as I can fit during summer. I set it to 18*C and this allows it to keep a pretty stable temp without using too much power. Obviously this is an ideal situation but I reckon if you keep an eye out during council pick ups and find an old nonn working fridge and do as Tipsy does you'd be well on your way. Also the more beer you put in it, (the greater the thermal mass) the more stable the temperature.

Same thing works for me - the more beer you put in the more evenly tempered I get...

Beer lives inside just like my wine.

Double brick house in the Adelaide Hills is like a cellar albeit a fraction warmer.

Shed is for tools, not beer

My beer is on the shed, I'm in brissy and I don't have dramas. But I also can't compare with keeping it in a cellar.
