Pogierob's brewery.
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
To be honest, I don't know.
It also depends in the brew, most I prefer out of the keg although I bottled two out of my Easter keg citra pale two weeks ago, keg was ok. Bottle was better today . It just seemed to have bigger citrus burst to it.

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
We're getting off topic for this thread (sorry Rob), but I can't place it either. For some reason my bottled beer is coming out over-carbed, which I reckon might have something to do with it. My most recent IPA I primed to only 2.3 vols of c02, yet it's highly carbed when I pour it. There seems to be little difference from the beers I primed to 2.7 vols. I bulk prime using dextrose so I'm not sure what's going on at the moment. Next time I bottle a PA/IPA I might try 2 vols.
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
Back on topic. New additions to the brew house.

No glamping allowed unless wives or significant other halves are present.
NO EXCEPTIONS.

I'm personally happy with a box of beer, my swag, a snag and a fire.
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
Thought I better tidy up the stc-1000 a bit.

Nice one !
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
Is that a very big flask, or a very small starter??
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
It's 1000ml flask, I read you need 500ml water and add a cup of dme to get 1.040. I was brewing yesterday so I simply grabbed 500ml from the wort when gravity was 1.040 (forgot to account for the dme).
I figure I should be ok as the brew is only 1.049
Am I ok or should I step it again and pitch
Tomorrow?

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
It depends on your estimated cell count. What was the manufacture date on the yeast pack? Use a little yeast calculator like this: http://www.cheapmonkeys.com/yeastcalc/ to help you work out how "viable" your pack is, and therefore what size starter you'll need to get to your required cell count.

I've put in a 19l batch of 1.049 ale. It tells me you "optimally" need 173 billion cells to pitch liquid yeast. Then I've put in that you had a Wyeast pack manufactured on April 1, 2014. That tells me you have 46 billion viable cells in that pack (they drop from 100b pretty quick).
So in 1st step, I've put in a .5 litre starter, and chosen "Stir Plate" as the method of aeration. As you can see, it says you'll end up with 108 billion cells. Which is still 65 billion short of what you need for an optimal pitch rate.
If you do a 2nd step, another 500ml starter into which you pitch your 108b will result in 172b, so that would work. Of course your pack might have been newer than April 1, which changes things a bit?
Next time...a 1.5 litre starter would have given you 180b cells, which would have worked. You'll need a bigger flask though, unless you do what I do and use a 3 or 4l plastic bottle, and just shake it every now and then (there's a choice for "intermittent shaking" instead of "stir plate".

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
thanks mate, that helps a heap!!!
I'm going to step it up, I actually ended up with a 24 litre batch this time around and the date on the yeast is 16 June.
doing a two step will get me there

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
Geez you did well to get hold of a 2 week old liquid yeast. Where did you pick that up, G&G?
Re: Pogierob's brewery.
A moments silence for my keg fridge. Although our love affair was short, it was deep.
You will be sadly missed.

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
Happy news it is time to upgrade the family fridge. Which translates to getting the old one that I think should fit 5 kegs. .
Don't ask how I managed to convince but I did

Re: Pogierob's brewery.
A mate surprised me yesterday and bought me this as a thanks for giving him the nudge he needed to start brewing.
He is now biabing and a legend. Guess I'm going 3v
