Just remember with the coke bottles (or any other clear bottle) to keep your beer out of the light to avoid "skunking".

Trueman,

2000 (the number of millilitres in two litres)
/ 375 (the number of millilitres recommended per carbonation drop)
= 5.33 carbonation drops per 2 litres.

I'd go six in lighter-style beers like lager or light ales, but only five in darker beers like a stout or dark ale.

Unless, of course, you don't mind cutting carbonation drops into thirds (halves would be close enough).

Cheers,

Okay thanks Oliver. I might just buy a box of Coopers pet bottles and use 1.25 coke bottles for the remainder. My problem is I have already bottled my first batch which wont be ready to drink by the time my second batch is put down. I want to start my secodn batch now so its ready in time for the judging as I have 24 days to go.

flat beer and PET bottles

Thanks everyone for your input.

I am convinced that PET bottles used for uncarbonated spring water are not suitable.

My first batch was in bottles from a brew supply place and it was fine.

I also had a couple of Pepsi bottles and they too were fine.

Best Regards

Okay good tip poppe. I suppose that makes sense considering they aren't carbonated although I cant see why they would be made differently but who knows?
I will certainly keep it in mind.

Two reasons: wall thickness, and the shape of the base.

non-carbonated PET bottles are much thinner - which is why they generally have ribs to provide some rigidity to the bottle

The flat bottom of the bottle just can't resist the pressure of carbonation, which is why they bulge.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer

Comes in brown glass 750ml screw top bottles

The top is an exact match for the Coopers PET bottles

Best of both worlds, glass bottle with no capping

On PET bottles does anyone else have the problem of the first glass being great,2nd cloudy & 3rd very cloudy and thicker. 740ml bottles and primed with 2 carbonation drops. This does'nt happen with my glass stubbies. Any Ideas?

Big AL,

You are disturbing the yeast bed as you pour it out of the bottle and then let it fall back again. Your stubbies are single use so they don't under go the same effect.

Get a jug and pour the whole bottle into the jug in one continues pour, stop pouring when you see the sediment starting to come out of the bottle. Then every glass out of the jug will be like the first.

Nice one you two,

I would never have figured that one out, not in a million, I would have kept pouring it into the wee glass which is why I stayed away from 2 litre bottles. Where the hell were you two when I was bottling

Put it in a jug, priceless

Thanks

So Dogger,

You've never ordered a jug at pub? Must be an Australian thing.

Another alternative is not to care if your beer is a little cloudy.

Dogger,

The 'Pub' is the local drinking establishment / Bar / on licence etc.

I **THINK** it is short for 'Public Bar'.

Cheers,

Greg.

We don't have a local that is under 25 KM away, unless you count my basement as one, and it isn't worth the risk to be drinking and driving these days so I haven't had a jug in years

Thanks Beerpig for the Bundy ginger beer bottle idea. I have been using cascade apple cider bottles which also work well. Now I can double my bottles
