yeast and pet bottles

Post by Guest »

asking this question for my father, he was told by someone that the yeast in beer brakes down the plastic in pet bottles (he uses coke bottles) and releases toxins so they should not be used. Is the plastic used in coppers pet bottles any different than coke bottles?

PET bottles can handle Coca-Cola, can't see the little old yeasties causing them much grief.

Most yeast start to struggle with the more complex carbohydrates, polyethylene terepthalate might be a bit too complex a carbon arrangement for them.

I won't rule it out, but remain very sceptical.

Cheers,

Greg.

You dad will die from being hit by a bus before he dies (or is even made sick, except for a hangover maybe) from drinking beer bottled in plastic bottles.

You might find this thread useful. http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... .php?t=264 In particular, click on the link to the Urban Legends Reference Page. Makes interesting reading.

Good to hear the old myths still get aired occasionally. That is a myth started by a marketer working for evian when they found out that many people were re-using their bottles, and not buying more of their product.

If the bottle can handle something that can eat metal, I am sure it can contain a beer.

Think about it, do you like eating plastic, no(sorry that was rehtorical), and neither does the yeast.

If you live in a town, you can pick up two or three 600ml soft-drink bottles every day when you go for your walk to the shops. The bottles, including their caps, are kindly left for you by young people. Most bus-stops have a bottle. After football matches, you can farm dozens. Pop them in bleach solution for an hour, wash out, and you'll not need to pay 80c for one with "Coopers" written on the carton.
I tell you this so that you can stop thinking about re-using them more than once or twice. Fill them, paint them if you want to keep the light out, drink and throw.
