Well after much waiting it's finally here, my Chilzilla wort chiller arrived today from US.

Shipping was about $35US and took 9 weeks to get here by surface mail.

IT's a solid piece of gear and will bolt onto brew bench, when I build it!

Is cleaning just run rinse water through it when finishded, and sanitising run boiling water through it?

Looks more simple than a large pot in a bath tub full of ice water.

you got it Greg, just run hot rinse water through at end with a bit of bleach of use, then sanitise before using and away you go!

All you need is a water source handy to use while chilling!

Looks interesting, Grabman.

I may have missed something obvious, but, how is the water chilled? Or is the "chilled water" simply tap water at normal tap water temperature?

yes cooling water for hot wort is just tap water that flows in opposite direction to wort through external pipe, hence name counteflow chiller. The idea is as the two liquids flow through their respective tubes heat is exchanged and the wort comes out cool enough to go into fermenter.

Grab,

Don't use bleach, it will really screw up the copper, I kid you not. Take a little bit of copper and put it in some bleach solution see what happens.

Use TSP or peroxide although I would question peroxide even

Good Luck with it, I will stick with my plate heat exchanger

Not to be insulting but because it is hot.

As the T drops, it hangs around a nasty temp profile that is favourable to bacterial growth and a profile not so good to yeast devlopment so bacteria get s a head start.

Cooling the wort rushes it through that profile so the yeast can giddy up before the bacteria.

Simple terms folks.....simple terms.

Dogger, how long have you had it for? are there any issues with it clogging up with break etc?

But why use a cooler rather than just dumping it straight onto cold water in the fermenter? Do you do something extra with the wort once it is cooled?

Lebowski,

Dogger (and most other AGers) boil all (or nearly all) their wort (ie all 23L or so), so there is no significant amount of "cold water in the fermenter" to dump it into.

Also you probably shouldn't just "dump" it into the fermember, because you are risking hot-side aeration of the wort, which means your beer is much more prone to oxidation and going stale.
