HELP!!! Fermenter not bubbling!!!

This is my first brew. I sterilized everything with diluted bleach water (1/8 cup to 5 gallons water). However I didnt' rinse the water solution off. I ensured the temps were good. I used a bagged yeast solution & gave it an hour after popping to start rising. After cooling the wort, I syphoned it into the 6.5 gallon glass carboy (this included a lot of sediment). I then poured the yeast mixture into the carboy via a steralized funnel. I did not stir it a lot (mistake I know). This was 36 hrs ago. There is a lot of sediment in the bottom of my carboy and no bubbling. Should I agitate? Should I just leave it alone? Thanks.

I would agitate it, I think there a 'few' posts on the forums about this if you search

just check and make sure there are no leaks.

To test put a little water on the lid around the airlock and squeeze the carboy. If it bubbles through the rubber gromit then there's that problem. If that doesn't bubble and the airlock doesn't move a lot, then your seal is needing more tightening.

With the sediment on the bottom that sounds as if it is fermenting.

Now its probably just me, but i cant think of a way to squeeze a glass carboy without it, you know, shattering

Although its from the inside which amounts to the same thing. Remember Bernulli? Yeh, he proved that things blow, thats why your vaccum cleaner works, cause it blows, really, it doesn't suck, it only blows

i presumed he had a plastic one. Glass, you could, block off the airlock put a small plastic bag around the top and seal with a couple of rubber bands. IF it inflates then there's a leak, or introduced leak

if the carboy explodes, then it wasn't your seal

Well all, I took advice & shook her up a bit yesterday afternoon. This morning she's bubbling like a baby!!!!! It's so pretty.

Thanks for the help & reassurance. My first time & all so I was paranoid. I've made bread for years so I wasn't too worried about the yeast being dead from the temp but from the bleach water & the fact that it all settled to the bottom I was going crazy.

All is well in my world today.

btw, yes it's caffeine. i had the molecule tattooed on my arm about 10 years ago. I game @ lan parties so that is my handle. Been roasting my own coffee for quite some time. There is no comparison between store bought coffee vs home roasted so I thought I'd give brewing a try as beer must be the same. Lots of fun so far.

what's involved in roasting coffee at home? I love a good coffee and am always searching for the perfect bean! some tips would be cool.

I already grind my own etc but have never roasted my own.

For those who don't like me speaking of coffee on a brew site, look at it this way, you can stay awake longer to drink more beer

It's easier than brewing and takes much less time. The only thing many don't like about it is that you roast very often (I roast twice a week). You start noticing the staleness of whole beans you purchase @ coffee shops that were roasted 2-3 weeks prior.

Thanks for the heads up on the coffee!

Will have a look locally and see what is out there, cost of bringing machine in from US is too great not to mention the voltage difference!

My latest brew wasnt bubbling and I thought it might just be a slow start because I put it in the cellar.
Then I pulled the little red hat off the airlock and water spewed out, guess it was on a bit tight Smelled really nice though.
