Idophor

Post by Daron »

I've done a search but am after the definitive answer:

How best to use this stuff?

I have been filling 3 caps full into 30 litres in my fermenter, soak instruments I need, etc and then drain and let dry. I also emptied some into bottles I intended using, shook the bottle and emptied it and let drain till dry before filling with the good stuff.
I overheard in the HBS that I only need to spray a mixture of Idophor inside my tub, shake some solution in bottles and leave it at that (keeping in mind I clean the tub after use, and rinse all bottle thoroughly after drinking.

So, the question is:

Do I need to soak for 15 minutes or just spray and dry?

Daron, i clean/scrub my fermentors with 2litres of boiling left to sit for 20mins or so. at the end of the boil i dilute 5ml of idophor with 5 litres of water in the fermentor, brush out the fermentor & lid, & shake the fermentor with the lid on so that the idophor comes into contact with whole inside of the fermentor & leave it sit for 20mins, occasionally i'll shake the fermentor once or twice over the 20mins.. after 20mins i shake it up again & empty it out.. i then sit the fermentor upside down on the lid & leave it to drain for 10min before adding the wort. this method seems to work well for me.
i used to rinse with boiled water but after a few suspected infections & reading the following link i gave up.. http://www.bayareamashers.org/content/m ... dophor.htm

That's a ripper site, DB! Thanks.

I guess we can be overzealous when cleaning and, let's face it, it's the part of brewing that really makes you procrastinate. Well me anyway.

At least I'm on the right track.

Cheers.

damn straight you are Daron. Idophor is the way forward.. I've tried sodium met, bleach, neo pink, brew shield etc & found idophor to be the most effective... & cheap :D

Yeh,

There was a guy here sang its praises before, and no disrespect, he had it together, even if he talked a bit funny

I am leary myself, not that I can prove it one way or another, which is one of my criteria. So try it, let me know how it makes out please.

Dogger.. i have been using it for almost a year now - around 900mls into a litre bottle of it to be precise (which works out to be around 900litres diluted  ).. & i've had no issues apart from as i previously mentioned a few off tastes which i attributed to the rinsing with boiling water. the only downside (if it is a downside) is that it stains plastic if left to soak for too long.. but the staining fades with time (or bleach) anyways.
at $30 a litre (1000litres diluted) you cannot go wrong imo

Hey db,

I finally found a HBS that supplies Iodophor, I'm going to go with your method for sanitising the bucket.

Would pouring some solution from bottle to bottle, a quick shake, then drain be ok ?

thanks

i guess it depends on how clean your bottles are YG. if your bottles don't have any build up/residue, i'd say it should be ok..
my bottles are pretty clean (i soak my bottles overnight in a weak sodium percarbonate solution regularly to remove the yeast build up etc) i bulk prime so i sanitise my 2nd fermentor (+hoses, spoons etc) 10litres of idophor (in the 2nd fermentor) & drain a small amount into each bottle, shake them up, leave them to sit for 10mins or so, then drain for 10-20mins then bottle

I have been filling my fermenter as high as possible, the I drain it into the bottles I'm using, tip them out straight away or let them sit until all the bottles are filled.

I always rinse my bottles 3 times after I've emptied them.

Never had a problem yet with this set up.
