I tossed away a bottle of my Coopers Pilsner last night because it tasted foul.
I think it the same thing you are suffering from Ausdag.
To me it tasted exactly like the sanitising solution I started using from the supermarket
Sodium Met. Aweful stuff - I've gone back to neo pink - that sodium met ruined my beer.
Can anyone confirm that this is the reason for a chemical taste?
I found this thread on a another forum
Lots of people use Sodium Met because it's sold in supermarkets as a brewing steriliser. Lots don't rinse their bottles after sanitising - I've always done it- I agree that it leaves a nasty taste, one that I couldn't get out of my fermenter between brews.
I've switched to Morgan's Sanitise - much better result.

Silk, Don't rush to any conclusions on the santiser. The Coopers Pilsner comes with a true lager yeast and depending on conditioning time/temp, you may be tasting sulphourous odor, aroma which is not uncommon with lager yeasts.
How long did you leave to condition? I suggest you leave it to condition further preferably in cool temps.
Cheers

I bottled on 15 August so its been conditioning for 2 1/2 months now. I did taste some that were ok a bit sweet but that was the lactose (experiementing mistake ).
The temp is about 18c in the bunker at the moment but has been a bit cooler of teh past few months.
I do need a fridge though for just this reason- still looking for one.
But this one last night was just undrinkable I can still taste it now uuurrrggg. Metalic/chemical.
So that is why I thought it might be that I didn't rince some of the bottles as well as I should have. I am usually pretty thorough.
What do you think?
Cheers

If its only a few bottles and not the entire batch perhaps it was simply due to rinsing, if more bottles over time have a similar taste you might have an infection.
One last question how did you prime? The metallic chemical taste is confusing, was it more chlorine, acidic, or sulphourous tasting. In my mind if it were chlorine tasting it could be the sanitiser, acidic could mean and infection or sulphourous possibly immature.
I am doubting it is the water because this is the first brew out of 18 that has done this.
Also, I was extra careful sanitising this batch because it was for a gift. Some gift ! - I'll not be giving this one
We cracked a couple at a picnic, they were better but not a classic. I've not brewed the Coopers Pilsner before however have bottled a few different Pilsner brands previously (ESB etc) that were brilliant.
I'll be putting down another one on the weekend to test it out.
I'll use a different sanitiser and filter the water this time.
Thanks for the help.
Cheers

No worries mate,
I've got one in the secondary as we speak
Coopers brewmaster pilsner
500g LME
500g Coopers brew enhancer 1
12g saaz hops
I cold fermented in sink with ice so was probably around 18-20 slightly too high for a lager, and will be cold conidtioning in the fridge for a month or two. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I used Sodium Met. but made sure I rinsed it very well...even though the instructions on my bottle of Sodium Met say 'Do Not Rinse' and that the SM will not affect the beer (Wander Brand).
beer suffering from chlorine will not taste like chlorine. It has a sharp metallic taste whith a chemical after taste often referred to as a band aid taste. It is unmistakeable. The chlorine you see reacts with phenols wich develop in late stage fermentations like 3 weeks after you bottle. The product is known as chlorophenol and a little like 10 ppm will make a beer taste bad. In extreme cases (and I have had them) you can smell it.
Nine times out of ten, if you have a beer perfect in everyway (clear, no excessive foaming, no skin on the surface) the culprit is chlorophenols which comes from either the sanitiser or the water

Ausdag,
I use tap water from the cold water tap or filtered water as we have a water filter for drinking water installed. To be honest I haven't noticed any taste difference, either way.
I do try to use the filtered water though (it's a two canister job, one with a carbon medium and the other a fine cartridge filter), its fitted to the kitchen sink.
Okay, well I won't know 'till I try, so I've sourced some natural spring water 10L for $4, so two of them and the ingredients to try and do a James Squire Amber Ale clone, make sure the equipment is well sterilised, get the laundry tub ready with bags of party ice to keep the temps down, hopefully I'll avoid the nasty flavours this time. Wish me luck.

Well I tried the same recipe again - 1 kit Coopers Real Ale, LDM plus 15g Fuggles finishing hops, but this time I used 2 x 10L Home Brand Spring Water ($3.50 each) and voila!!....no bad flavours. Impatient that I am, I cracked a bottle after only a week and a half and I was impressed, so I can't wait to try it again in a month or two.
Fermenting: Responsibly American Brown (Drink Responsibly) My first AG!
Bottled: Fuggles Larger/ale, Honey I'm Home Ale, Entropy Wheat, Dark Matter Ale, The Beer that Should Not Be (IPA)
Well, I didn't see any and it tastes good. I then found a water vending machine at the shopping centre where I can refill the 10L bottles for $2 but I'm not sure what the mineral composition is.
