Matilda Bay Rooftop Red Lager (from kits?)
Matilda Bay Rooftop Red Lager (from kits?)
Anyway to make something similair tasting to this with kits or malt extract? (doesnt have to be the same colour or anything)
Site says it uses carared and melanoidin malts and hersbrucker hops. (I'm guessing I wont find these as malt extracts?)

Made one very similar with the following, wasn't intended.
1 Can Coopers Lager
1.5 kg amber malt
200g Crystal malt (steeped 10 min)
50g Chocolate malt (steeped 10 min)
15g Hallertau (but could use hersbrucker if you want) (steeped 10 min)
Saflager
22L
Had a MBRTRL the other day and was struck by how similar it was to this brew of mine. Not exact but may give you something to think about.
Cheers,
Jay.

Coopers Draught kit.
1Kg Ultrabrew (500g LDME,250 Dextrose, 250g Maltodrextrin)
150gm Crystal (145L) grain
150gm Melanoidin grain
24gm Hallertauer Steeped
12gm Hallertauer Dry.
How much water and at what temperature would you steep this much grain in? (I have a coffee plunger handy but am not sure how big it needs to be)
I've just started sampling my second batch of this. It's a really nice drop, but the second time I only fillled to about 19-20 litres (sorry at work and using guesswork) and it's taken a bit longer to settle down.
I strained the grains in about 500ml boilt water and let sit. Cant recall how long without notes.
I will try in coming days to give clearer notes, but follow the recipe and you cant go wrong.

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzz !!!
All jokes aside, I reckon it's what O&GHB&B is lacking.
Apologies O & G, no disrespect intended.
To quote a recent new member, " it"s a top site without all the usual BS ",
too true, imo, a favourites/polished recipes reference would top it off.

Re: Matilda Bay Rooftop Red Lager (from kits?)
I made a beer that was REASONABLY SIMILAR to Rooftop last year.
I was working on advice from Colin at Brew Your Own at Home and used the following ingredients:
Brewcraft Munich Lager kit
Morgan's Caramalt Master Blend (1kg)
Coopers Light Malt (liquid) Extract (500grams)
Dried Corn Syrup (250g)
Morgans Finishing Hops - Hallertau
I used two yeasts - the kit yeast as well as one given to me by Colin (Brew Yeast 6G 7040)
Nothing out of the ordinary in the process, started at 1042 and couldn't shift it lower than 1014. Believe me I tried EVERYTHING but that was as low as she would go.
It really tasted absolutely fabulous. Couldn't fault it other than to say it was almost too rich to drink more than a couple in a session. But then I find Rooftop a bit rich to be a session beer so maybe that's a good sign.
When I make it next (winter this year) I will change very little - probably add more hops if anything.
Hope this helps someone looking for a very simple way to make a red lager.
Throsby.
