Mike,

Start with Coopers. http://www.coopers.com.au
I have seen thier Sparkling and Pale Ales being referred to as "Australian Ale" so we may be getting somewhere. They are both very easy drinking.
Thier Best Extra Stout is delicious.

Also try Matlida Bay and Little creatures breweries, but they are to a certain extent replicating styles from around the world. Quite well too.

The oldest still operating brewery in Australia is Cascade in Tas. http://www.cascadebrewery.com.au/ It has been churning out the brewskies pretty much since 1824.

I'll post some more when I find the references, I may have to look up a book.

Cheers,
Greg

Mike,

The typical mainstream Australian lager is described by Willie Simpson (one of Australia's leading beer writers) as:
...pale gold , medium-bodied with moderate bitterness; it was a beer designed to be drunk cold and in large volumes.

We export it to the world to avoid having to drink it ourselves.

Cheers,
Greg.

mprilla, can you source "Pride of Ringwood" hops? If so, I can help you produce a good Australian Ale. If not, fair well with whatever you like.

We do!! To the US. There was a big fuss over it about 3 years ago when the export began.
