Coopers Sparkling Ale

Post by Dogger Dan »

Gentlemen,

I am in a delema and very excited. I have aquired a Coopers Sparkling Ale. Now for most of you I am sure can just run to the local and all is good, not so here in Canada,

I have been looking for sometime and requesting and low and behold one appeared in my stocking along with a Sapporo and a Kostriker (Good Old St Nick, he always gets it right). Now I have followed a few of the threads and as I only have one of these bad boys I don't want to dick this up. My question is, what is the best way to drink this puppy and what should I have it with?

Just in case there is any doubt I posted a pic of this well travelled individual so you can recognize it for what it is

Many Thanks

Dogger,

Good morning and congratulations on coming into posession of a Sparkling Ale. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. (And isn't that kangaroo on the neck of the bottle a tacky touch for the export market!)

There are two schools of thought on how it should be served.

Some believe that you should pour it gently so as to leave the sediment behind in the bottle. (The advantage of this method, particularly as it's such a rarity for you to have a Sparkling Ale, is that you can culture the yeast.)

Others believe the bottle should be tipped upside down or rolled (traditionally along the bar) to mix the sediment through.

There's been some discussion about cloudy v. fine previously. See http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... .php?t=156

However, the main thing, as I'm sure you'd be aware, is to not serve it too cold. It's not the kind of thing you drink at cellar temperature as a British cask-conditioned ale. Just have it slightly chilled and enjoy.

Cheers,

Oliver

Dogger,

Have you tried the Sparkling Ale yet?

What was the verdict?

Hmmm... I'm hoping we haven't built it up too much.

Oh well, either way it'll be a beer you haven't tasted before Dogger. On the subject of the Sparkling Ale, has anyone else noticed the variation in this beer ? Sometimes you buy one that's perfectly carbonated and tastes spot on, other times it can be a bit flat. I guess you can expect this with the methods they use to make it, and even the ones that aren't spot on are bloody good.

Just an observation.

Actually,

I think I will save it for Jan 26 and have it in celebration. Seems fitting no?

Ah, Invasion Day... I mean Australia Day! How the bloody hell do you know the date? 1/3 of Aussies wouldn't even know it by it's name, it's more commonly refered to as the January long weekend.

Dogger, a very fitting day indeed to drink your Coopers, as long as you're using it to wash down a snag in bread (or more fittingly for a South Aussie beer - a pie floater?)

It doesn't matter how or when you do it, just enjoy it!

For those who are wondering, find out more about what a pie floater is here:

http://thegreenman.net.au/mt/archives/000536.html

It might sound disgusting, but it's quite nice (but then the Scots say that about haggis and black pudding, don't they)

You can also read about it here:

http://www.tatiana.com.au/diary3.htm

It sounds so much better when Tatiana Grigorieva is describing it.

Many places seem to have their local late night speciality food for those with a munchies attack after a few beavies. I had heard of a pie floater but is was in a fiction book so did not think that it really existed! Now I know better.

Strangely enough, many North American calendars have US, Canadian, British and Australian holidays.

My spongebob calendar has US, Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, NZ and a whole heap of other countries' holidays. Guess that little yellow guy is quite a jet-setter.

The Hipone

Sorry to hear about Sponge Bob and once again my feelings are hurt so I guess it is about time to tell this little dit. Please no one take this wrong.

Once upon a time I belonged to my Countries Navy, (which would be the Canadian Navy). As we share the Pacific Ocean, we had an exchange program with the Australian Navy. So I had the oppertunity to work a fair bit with the folk from the Land Down Under. This was fun. What made it nice was a few years later as I walked down a beach in Hawaii a bunch of folk reached out and dragged my sorry arse into a bar. Sure enough it was some of my mates I met from Australia. This to was good. That they remembered me and had the stones to risk what they did I figured Aus and Canucks were very close. I still think so. I guess during the exchange I had, I felt it was important to learn about all sorts of other things, the way folks lived and somewhat how they think, what days are important. I don't think for instant believe I could be an Aus, nor should you believe you could be Canuck.

That being said, July 1 st is Canada Day and I have never seen people celebrate harder than the Australians over Canada Day. Sometimes even harder than Canadians. It was this sort of spirit that got me involved in the "Worlds longest BBQ" which occurs every July 1 st and spans my country from the Atlantic to the Pacific (4 time zones).

That maybe I can remember that Jan 26 is an important date for a Country because I had the oppertunity to share some time with people from that Country shouldn't be blamed on my Calander and certainly not Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Additionally, if there is any question as to how I got to this site, it was a link through Coopers where I was trying to dig some data out out of them. After having the oppertunity to peruse for a while it seemed like a Great Site and I still think so. Not complex, just fun and at a level I could relate, laugh at and write to. No one has PLC that is regulating the temp of their sparge water.

So after all that, Jan 26 is important, at least to me, and certainly not because my kids hero tells me so.

Nuff said

Dogger

PS.

I am q'ing steak Jan 26

Jeez, sorry that you took what I wrote that way, I wasnt trying to hurt anyones feelings but illustrate a point that even a calendar aimed specifically at kids has a lot of info about the customs of other countries.

Quick quiz, when's the 4th of July? :P

Dogger!!
I knew there was something different about you - you use/understand too much Strine to have picked it up on this board alone. I wondered if, perhaps, you have a www-maina, but nah; you're simply being yourself, and that's good enough for me. :D

Sorry to sound off on that one

I have had a dayful from those who think that if you come from a town where cows out number the human population your IQ drops to that of the cows.

Apparently we don't get news either

Once again, Sorry
