Improve Coopers PA kit?

Post by Rob E »

Hello Folks,

Have got a Coopers Aust PA kit that i intend to brew next at 19 degrees or so, i was wondering if anyone can guide me on the best fermentables to add.... ideally i want something similar to the Little Creatures PA

I have at my disposal Coopers BE1 and 2, LDME and Dextrose.....i am happy to go and grab other ingredients if needed.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Cheers

hey Rob, if you want it close to LCPA you'll have to do more than play with the fermentables

to get a nice american pale ale somewhere in the ballpark though you could probably use either the BE1 or BE2, fermented with safale US-56 and add some cascade hops in for the grapefruit aroma (probably at least 20g)

furthermore a bit of dry wheat malt is often recommended when trying to emulate LCPA and you could steep a bit of crystal grain to make it really special although the crystal would probably make it a fair bit darker in colour than LCPA

yeh - what he said ^^^^^^^^^

except you could also add chinook hops as well, say 10 grams of each (pellets) half in hot water for 5 minutes, and half dry hopped. The body that the crystal provides is true to APA style, but not to LCPA's take on it.

Go directyly to home brew shop for hops, do not pass go, and dont visit a shop that keeps their hops unrefridgerated.

i have also tried a clone with willamette and cascade hops - not too bad, so if your HBS doesn't have chinook (i know mine doesn't) you could try that instead

I also tried a CPA using Willamette I had left over from a JSAA clone. I also used BE2 and 500g malt and recultured a CPA yeast. Easily the best home brew I've done.

Try a Coopers Pale Ale can with a Grumpys Boston Cream Masterbrew.

Flosso, can you let me know how much Willamette and did you steep it?
I've got a heap of willamette and a CPA.
Thanks

Tipsy,

I don't have the figures on me so all I can remember is it was around half a packet of hops (prob around 15grams). I put them in a stocking, steeped them in a cup of boiling water for 10mins and then threw the water and the stocking into the wort.

If I can find out exactly how much I used I'll let you know.

Thanks for all the great feedback lads, Agree that i need to take a step up and start adding hops.... have decided to go with the below which is recommended by my local HB store to start rather than use the Coopers PA kit (will keep that for the timebeing) for the LCPA clone.

LCPA CLONE

Black Rock Pilsener Blonde
500g Dex / 250g Malto / 250 LDME
Safale
Cascade (steeped)

will give this a go.........also the old man will kick off tomorrow with

Coopers APA
BE 2 / 500g LDME
Kit Yeast
Cascade (steeped)

We will compare these in a couple of months to see how they turn out.

I'd make the Coopers Sparkling Ale as per the recipe, then add 40g of Cascade hops.

See this thread: http://www.homebrewandbeer.com/forum/vi ... php?t=2247

Hahaha. Yeah, Im with you Oliver.

When I have a Pale Ale Kit sitting there, I definately pick the Sparkling Ale over the PA.
