Yet another racking question

Post by BeerFrenzy »

Hi all...I've searched the forums with not much result for this precise question:

Racking. Does it totally eliminate sediment?

I would like to bottle some stubbies, put them in a stubby holder, and be able to drink the whole thing. Makes it easier for visitors to sample the home brew too...you know what these non-HB philistines are like...they dont even know about sediment! I can just see one swigging down a nice glob of sediment at a BBQ...leading to a tale that will be told for many years...and changed...rumours will abound...

I don't think you can eliminate it completely because of the way yeast works.

Speaking from my own experience, since I started racking I get very very little sediment in my bottles. It generally doesn't make it out of the bottle but if it does it vanishes into the glass never to be seen again.

I've had no complaints from the people I've given bottles too.

If you bottle and bottle prime then sediment cannot be avoided.

Racking will reduce to some degree the amount of yeast tranferred to bottles, as you allow the secondary to condition and some yeast drops out of suspension.

Start kegging, no sediment! You can actually bottle from force carbonated kegs, without any sediment, if you want to take a few stubbies or long necks to a party etc.....

If you serve in a dark brown stubby in a stubby holder, they probably won't be able to see the sediment. What they don't know won't have them prejudge the taste.
